Three HQ IR and metro videos. IR being a critical component of India's infrastructure deserves our attention.


^^ video showing a WAG 9 hauling a 50+ BOXN rake carrying coal to one of the many Indian coal fired power plants with no captive mines. Most indian thermal power plants get their coal from similar trains crisscrossing the country every day.


^^ cool time lapse video showing busy NDLS. It has the largest route interlock system in the world ofcourse.

1) RORO freighter passing duronto at Canacona (goa). RORO is an interesting concept in use with the IR where fully laden trucks are driven directly on flatcars and can then be transported across India thereby saving valuable fuel as well as time (loading/ unloading). IR uses these as a way to optimize the use of large umber of flatbed rakes that it has

Thanks for posting Indian railway engines. Lots of people crazy about engines and trains, youtube is full of such videos.
I love trains, they are exciting no matter how many time I see them. I even played Sid Meiers Railroad for quite long.

wow this is some thing amazing and simple technology, I have traveled in Konkan railway rout few times and used to wonder how could those train engines are able to control the wheels from loosing grip with heavy cargo loads when they are climbing steep slopes, and your video is very informative - in which it show how they spray sand to control the wheel from sleeping, could you please elaborate further on this technology if you are aware...

In-fact on the above video at '2.18' we can see the wheel is sleeping from griping the track!!! - Konkan railway route is one of the best Scenic rail routs in India passing through mountains and steep zigzag valley cutting and snaking in the mountains through 91 tunnels and over 2000 bridges...

Wheel slip normally is a very bad situation for any loco driver. Essentially he loses the contact between the rail and the wheels (a combination of train load, coefficient of friction and slope) and he either has to control the power judiciously (controlling traction using power manipulation) or using sanding to improve adhesion.

In Creep control, we basically use the usable adhesion which is still available after wheels start to slip. This adhesion peaks at a particular torque level and then starts to fall precipitously which can lead to uncontrolled spinning of the wheels. In case of the EMD locos, they have an ultrasonic doppler radar which determines the speed and tries to match the projected speed with the motor rpm to try and maintain the adhesion within an acceptable band (creep limit) and therefore makes use of the additional tractive force within this limit which would otherwise not be available. The wheel rotation (measured from the motor) should match the ground speed (radar readings) and any disparity is corrected for using dynamic AC motor control (computerized) to adjust the wheel slip within the creep limits and maintain tractive force at the max. possible levels under said creep conditions.
