The Tamil Nadu Government has launched major initiatives in rural housing and urban infrastructure in the Budget for 2010-11 presented in the Assembly on Friday.
The Finance Minister, Mr K. Anbazhagan, announced that the ‘Kalaignar Veetu Vasadhi Thittam’ aims to transform the thatched huts in rural areas to permanent concrete structures to create a hut-free Tamil Nadu. Over the next six years 21 lakh houses will be constructed under this programme. In the first year three lakh houses will be constructed at a cost of Rs 1,800 crore with the work starting in the coming financial year in all the village panchayats.
The unit cost of each house will be Rs 60,000 along the lines of the Central Government scheme, Indira Awaas Yojana. In addition, the State Government will construct one lakh houses under the Central Government scheme for which Rs 262 crore has been allocated in the Budget.
In the urban areas 60,000 houses are coming up through the Jawaharlal National Urban Renewal Mission in 2010-11, he said.
