What's new

India Developing, but still a long way to go

Noida-Gr. Noida is a new city in the poor Indian state of Uttar Pradesh (UP).

UP is among the poor states in India yet famous for it's cities like
  1. Lucknow
  2. Kanpur
  3. Allahabad
  4. Varanasi
  5. Agra
  6. and now Noida-Gr. Noida.
Re: Indian cities, UP cities are smaller in size, a couple of million at best. Politics in UP, and India till 2 yrs. ago, was mostly about rural votebank dividend and the cities went to rot. In said context, Noida-Gr. Noida with it's Delhi-NCR inclusiveness is quite a place. Mostly pvt. to boot.

Noida - IT Capital of NCR

  • All this even before Modi govt.
Gurgaon-Gurugram is another new city in relatively prosperous Haryana, erstwhile Punjab. Again mostly, pvt., even privately build metro rail system. Plus, Global call center-telecom-consulting-largest auto and motorcycle manufacturing center.

Gurgaon/Gurugram - Millennium City (HD)

The above are generation next of the partition of India and Pakistan. Above 2 cities are credit to generation next of post partition refugees and settlers. The majority of bushy tailed, educated and hard working workforce and citizens of above 2 cities, among many other new cities in India, are kids of migrants, refugees and settlers firstly from present day Pakistan and also close by catchment areas like UP, Bihar, Punjab, Himachal and Uttaranchal.

This is what 'Mohajir' settlers from India to Pakistan missed out.

:yahoo:Said cities are now reverse attracting middle-class Indian overseas settlers, immigrants and even refugees returning with skills, money and influence to reverse settlement in India !

While overseas Pakistanis have a stronger pull towards Pakistan re: dictatorship and Pak. Faujj induced nationalism, reverse migration to Pakistan; specially among the 'Mohajir', Punjabi or Sindhi types is often non-viable re: lack of roots, Global culture of Sindhi & Punjabi communities and of course security issues.

Expressways, Metro rail and mid-to-high-rises are changing India visibly. Needed complementary BRT systems and last-mile decluttering/de-bottlenecking. India must strongly implement a legit Visa/Restriction/Permit system in lieu of metro based political parties doing that and accruing themselves vigilante status.

Ghettoisation of Indian cities must make them significantly inefficient. Learn from Singapore/ Hong-Kong/Dubai.

(Slightly offtopic) It will be interesting if someone upload Google Earth historical images from the 1970s to the latest imagery of Indian cities like Bangalore, Kochi, New Delhi etc to see the spread of urban development. You can use Google Earth to download satellite images from different years.

Phew, those 'sheds'. Land grab anyone?

I honestly thought about investing my time and effort; however, cost benefits calculus says it's not worth it.

It is near my house. This small stretch of road has show rooms of many Indian and international brands. Hyundai, tata, Renault, bats, woodland, MacDonald, KFC, havmore, puma, Nike, apple, tanishq, titan eyes, croma, LG, shell, Dikin and many many more including jewellery , consumer goods and furniture and 50 + restaurants in just one and half km.

Definitely worth seeing the fast urbanization. A bit worrying too.
India has managed a sharp decline in urban slum population even after such rate.
That's why it's slum population is just half of Pakistan and Bangladesh (percentage wise) and close to middle income economies like China & Brazil.

Heartening to know.

Comparison, specially with Pak. not required on this issue. Independent issue, even w/o Pak.

10 yrs. more and slum/ghetto population may come down to manageable amount re: cheaper home loans, cheaper housing and vast infrastructure enabled satellite sub-cities and 100 new cities plan may play a part in this. Specially rapid urban transport infra. like the lifeline of Mumbai and Delhi, rail based mass transit Suburban/Local fast trains X-crossed with metro rail and of course, Delhi's famed Delhi Metro.

All major cities now have metro rail in various stages of implementation.

First off, here’s wishing everyone a Happy New Year!

As 2016 comes to an end, it’s a good time to recap the busy year that just passed by. I’ve updated the Quick Snapshot page‘s chart to display current operational, under construction, proposed and approved figures for all systems which are under construction.

view a higher resolution of the chart here

The award for the most improved metro system in 2016 goes to Mumbai where construction on 3 lines (2, 3, 7) totaling 68.6 km started in the 2nd half. Chennai added 9.9 km of metro routes to its network – the most by any system in India. Delhi, the largest of all systems, had a busy 2015 with the opening of 3 sections of the 160 km Phase 3, but didn’t see any line openings in 2016 due to a lack of timely approvals, poor contractor progress and tunneling difficulties. Bangalore opened its first underground stretch in April and ended the year on a remarkable note with its operator inviting bids for 3 stretches of the Phase 2 project which’ll ensure the start of construction for another 37.431 km of metro lines in Q4 of next year. Trial runs in Lucknow started on December 1 as its operator had originally announced in 2014. The system is being targeted to open in March next year and will go on to be the fastest metro project to be commissioned.

Highlights of 2016
• Operationalization of 14.7 km of new metro lines in 2 cities – 4.8 km in Bangalore and 9.9 km (8.6 km, 1.3 km) in Chennai
• Commencement of trial runs on 66.87 km of new metro lines in 6 cities – 8 km in Bangalore, 8 km in Chennai, 28.37 (23 km, 5.37 km) in Delhi, 7 km in Gurgaon, 9 km in Kochi and 6.5 km in Lucknow.
• Start of construction for 121.696 km of new metro lines in 6 cities – 9.47 km (4.62 km, 4.85 km) in Ahmedabad, 11.16 km (4.869 km, 6.29 km) in Bangalore, 2.4 km in Chennai, 12.07 km (3.44 km, 8.63 km) in Lucknow, 68.6 km (33.5 km, 18.6 km, 16.5 km) in Mumbai and 18 km (7.61 km & 10.387 km) in Nagpur
• Saw new rolling stock designs being unveiled for Kolkata, Navi Mumbai and Noida as well as the roll-out of new trains for Delhi, Lucknow and Kochi.
