India Developing, but still a long way to go

If India's grows at 8% from 2015 onwards then it will take until 2030 to become fully developed and 2040 to become a middle income country like Russia at this stage.

5 Indian cities score high on global IT talent survey

MUMBAI: As much as half the world's top 10 cities based on the percentage of new residents with technology skills is in India, a LinkedIn study has found.

Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai topped the list, with Gurgaon coming in at the end. The ranking is based on an analysis of the geographic movements of the social networking site's 300 million members, looking at every new position added to their profiles between November 2012 and November 2013.

"Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai and Gurgaon contribute to a major chunk of India's overall IT revenues and the tech jobs created in these cities are much higher than many other global locations.
The startup wave and increasing focus of tech entrepreneurship have also contributed to this," said Sangeeta Gupta, senior vice president of IT industry body Nasscom. It helps also, according to Ikya Human Capital Solutions Chairman Ajit Isaac, that India is experiencing a youth bulge. "Nearly two-thirds of Indians are under 35 and mobility never comes in the way of career decisions." The study is a great validation of the strategic importance of India, said Nishant Rao, country manager at LinkedIn.
"Finally we have the scale and the talent. But it's important for CEOs and management teams to try and proactively use technology across areas including their hiring strategy, empowering the workforce and moving from quantity-based to quality-based processes," he said.

My comment : Bay Area, Seattle, Melbourne, Sydney and Austin too are full of Indian IT types. Indians carry weight in IT biz.

being sarcastic? but namo, or no namo; this decade india had to take off sharply. It is the culmination of slow build up of last many decades/ last century. Next two-three decades india's economy will be unstoppable (unless someone manages to create a major crisis, like civil war paralyzing india- which is highly unlikely). just look at the scale of one DMIC, the kind of investment it is going to bring, and new cities that will be created in it. And all that was started when there was confused inefficient government with multiple power centers. A little better management and all that should accelerate even more.

only 8% ? Even in last decade, with leadership crisis, and huge global economic slowdown, India achieved 7 to 8 % average growth rate. Now with recovery of global economy, India should achieve more than 10 % GDP growth rate if the new government is at least slightly more efficient than the last one.

India's 'tryst with destiny' vision meant that development was a primary, long term issue. Not security.
India inherited an awesome Colonial administrative juggernaut. This juggernaut was steered towards India's vision. Processes and institutions were re-aligned. New institutions like the IIT's were set-up to break down the vision into goals. Goals devolved into processes that were broken down baby step-by-step, into action items.

Unfortunately, defense and security became priority issues because India's neighbors destablised the neighbourhood.

Up till the 80's defence and security chewed up India's meager resources. Only in the 80's did India launch it's economy because the Pak. bust-up issue had been settled in the early 70's re: Bangladesh.

Back on track, the original vision was targeted. The 90's brought, to give credit where credit is due, PV Narashimha Rao as PM who pumped Dr. MMS

India's development vision was set with the 'tryst of destiny' narrative long yrs. ago, processes and action items got India's there, almost. India was ambushed by the very real, Global cold war which had strong repercussions in the S.Asian 'hood. Said cold war nasty, residual issues continue effing the neighbours, namely Af.-Pak.

It's a long evolving story, earned through sweat, blood and guts. No overnight miracle.

That's $ 100 Billion, in PPP terms, never mind Biryani, a $ still goes a long ways in Hyderabad. 1 city alone, Hyderabad, is raking in $ 100 Billion, yr.-on-yr. on IT alone. There's other stuff Hyderabad exports, overseas and continental wide, there are other, more traditional revenue sources, the tax base is young, single market GST roll-out is on the horizon (boom for all India business), agriculture (think tobacco, not rice) is not even taxed. What if they taxed HR export?
Hyderabad's main export must be NRI's. Professional, skilled and semi-skilled types globally, and specially the Gulf over multiple generations. Ok so they make up with remittances ...

Bangalore is another eg.

Sunrise industries. India's pharma biz. story is 1/2 as big as mega IT biz. Add on $ 50 for Hyderabad presently and $ 200 Billion for Bangalore by 2020 and you see mind-boggling riches. Bangalore has traditional monopoly on aerospace, rocket science and material science tech. This is just 1-2-3 'industries', I mean who cares for Hyderabadi zardozi or pearl this-&-that or Bangalore cotton or raw silk - no offense. Same for Pune, which also has traditional strengths in steel, auto, forgings- all boom time stuff; never mind Kolhapuri chappals.

I just realised that India's mega, colonial era cities are rich. Or full of richie-rich's. Retarded, ineffective policies make the city govt.'s poor. Mumbai for eg. is HQ's to Global mega Corp.'s and the world's richest communities like diamond biz. Jains, factory operator Parsis, cloth-to-gas peddlers Ambani's, BKC Marathi bankers, Sindhi gold smugglers, Ismaili bankers, Bhaiyya taxiwallahs, Christian professionals, Punjabdo and Baluchi filmi types, Bihari coolies and dabbawallahs ... yet they all get screwed over by the monsoon. Bombay then. There's Bangalore, Pune, Madras which are clearly rich. Delhi is in the middle of the green revolution country with Punjab on one side and Western U.P on the other. And factories like Maruti and Hero Corp. and Govt., IT, consulting, telecom, traditional N. India retail biz.'z etc. Calcutta has recovered, unlike Karachi, from it's Bangladesh war ghettoisation.

Of all the colonial cities of India which boomed beyond belief but still can't compare with their American, Canadian or Australian or local type Singapore, Dubai, Hong-Kong type counterparts, only Kanpur sticks out as a dirty, smelly, goonish call from the past. I did a quick google on Kanpur and was quite surprised, so moving on then ...

With all due respect, if in your opinion, Lucknow is the dirtiest capital you've set foot in, this is not the thread for you to lament about it; post your views in a place where they might do some good. The development of India (meaning- the positives, not the negatives) should be the main focus as the thread title suggests, and nothing else. Many thanks for your understanding.
