At a systemic, humane level, Pune is more affordable and sustainable then Mumbai.

Never mind politics, Pune is the child of Nehru's dream of a tech. and science based India rather than say caste, language and religion based cluster. The weight of Nehru's thrust today carries the caste, regionalism etc. with it.

An educated, hard working middle class couple can afford to live, work and even dream of a better life. Pune, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Coimbatore, Ahmedabad, Trivandrum, Mysore, Durgapur etc. and the new exurbs and sub-cities around the old colonial mega-cities Navi Mumbai, Gurgaon are the real outposts of modern India. They mint $ Billionaire's.

Bombay is a Global city (former British colonial outpost) run down by an India with other priorities. It's making a comeback. Give it 10 yrs.

The mass scale of self-supporting office and residential development has taken root and the pockets of slums, ghettos and poverty are balancing each other out. As this balancing out escalates, the merits of the new India will drive 'modernisation' rather then 'ghettoisation'. I see slums and ghettos being re-developed, I don't see all the new sleek office and residential complexes being bull-dozed and blown up to revert back to slums. For eg., check Mumbai Redevelopment Projects - Makeovers | Cluster Redevelopment | New Promenades etc.:
