India has surpassed the 10GW solar PV installation milestone having tripled its capacity in less than three years, according to a late night Tweet on Friday from energy and mines minister Piyush Goyal.

Details on how the landmark was reached have yet to be released by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), although local news outlets claim that the crossing was made when India’s largest utility NTPC commissioned another 45MW of PV at Bhadla Solar Power project, near Jodhpur, in the state of Rajasthan. That project now stands at 160MW in operation and NTPC has crossed the 500MW mark with 520MW solar commissioned.

By the end of February this year, installations stood at 9,567MW and despite capacities being well below the financial year target of 12GW in 2016/17, most industry members are in awe of India’s progress since the 100GW by 2022 target was confirmed by MNRE in 2015.

However, it's worth noting that consultancy firm Bridge to India reported that India actually crossed the 10GW solar deployment mark last November.

Tariffs are still reaching record lows as seen at the historic Rewa tender for 750MW in Madhya Pradesh last month with sub-three rupee prices. These were driven by an environment of capital flowing into India as well as a unique tender structure and PV equipment price declines. Even wind power prices are closing back in on solar, as seen in the latest Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) tender, where they reached around INR3.46/kWh (US$0.052).

Now its down to State Level Discoms... to buy all that available electricity and supply it to your homes. Catch hold of your Chief Ministers and roger them to do it.

Installed solar capacity by state as on 31st jan 2017 . ( Total at the end of Jan = 9235.24 MW )

The top 5 states in installed solar capacity are as follows...well done :yahoo:

Tamil nadu =1590.97 MW
Rajasthan=1317.64 MW
Gujarat=1159.76 MW
Telengana =1073.41 MW
Andhra=979.65 MW

Am confident that we will be able to reach 40000 MW of installed capacity in the next 5 years

40000 mw!! How?

what is the ratio of grid tied and off grid systems in India.

China's solar power capacity more than doubles in 2016 | Reuters

China's installed photovoltaic (PV) capacity more than doubled last year, turning the country into the world's biggest producer of solar energy by capacity, the National Energy Administration (NEA) said on Saturday.

Installed PV capacity rose to 77.42 gigawatts at the end of 2016, with the addition of 34.54 gigawatts over the course of the year, data from the energy agency showed.

Shandong, Xinjiang, Henan were among the provinces that saw the most capacity increase, while Xinjiang, Gansu, Qinghai and Inner Mongolia had the greatest overall capacity at the end of last year, according to the data.

China will add more than 110 gigawatts of capacity in the 2016-2020 period, according to the NEA's solar power development plan.

Solar plants generated 66.2 billion kilowatt-hours of power last year, accounting for 1 percent of China's total power generation, the NEA said.

The country aims to boost the mix of non-fossil fuel generated power to 20 percent by 2030 from 11 percent today.

China plans to plough 2.5 trillion yuan ($364 billion) into renewable power generation by 2020.

Please stop with the predictions. We all know predictions made by Indians never come true:

India would be a superpower by 2012: Kalam

Besides, India has little technology or industrial capacity to manufacture solar panels. Most panels are imported from foreign countries. So this achievement really isn't as great as the media makes it out to be. The more India installs solar panels, the more money the Chinese make.

India’s solar dreams, too, are made in China

So?
What if we import from china? We need cheap power and we are adding at brisk pace!!
We are not competing with china!
We jumped from 11 place last year to 5th place this year!!

Really? According to who? You? Who are you? And what credentials do you have to represent 1.3 billion Indians?
Lol...we are only competing with our energy needs!! We don't effing care about china!!
Only thing we want china to do is keep cost of the panels low!!
We are generating solar power at as low as 3rs per unit I.e 5 cents per kwh. How much does china sell it for?
