New Delhi : President Pranab Mukherjee Tuesday said India is fully committed to implement the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project by August 2017. "India is deficient in energy resources whereas Turkmenistan is rich in hydrocarbon resources. Our common endeavour should be to build enduring ties between our two friendly countries based on a long-term energy partnership," Mukherjee said when Rashid Meredov, deputy prime minister and foreign minister of Turkmenistan, called on him at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Turkmenistan, which holds more than 4 per cent of the world's natural gas reserves, is emerging as a potential partner in India's quest for energy security with the project advancing rapidly since the visit of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to New Delhi in 2010. State-run gas firm GAIL last year signed a gas purchase agreement with Turkmenistan's national oil firm for supplies through a transnational pipeline.

Billed as "Peace Pipeline", the 1,680-km TAPI pipeline will have a capacity to carry 90 million cubic metres a day (mcmd) gas for a 30-year period and will be operational in 2018. "This project is mutually beneficial for economic reasons. It is also important for bringing peace and development to our common region," said Mukherjee.

The president thanked Turkmenistan for its support for India's candidature for permanent membership of an expanded UN Security Council. Meredov responded warmly, describing India as a long standing friend and partner of Turkmenistan both in bilateral cooperation as well as in multilateral fora.

in afghanistan only through wakhan corridor rest through Pakistan and than to indian kashmir

apart from cost there are many associated problems like if the pipeline is broken in the sea by ships or submarine.the repairing would be a bigger problem

Your first point didn't clear who is going to be responsible for the safty. I know the route. But as far as I know the dam terrorists can hit anywhere in your country. And there are many people in your country who hate India. So the question of safty and supply has to be answered.

Yes the cost would be nearly double. But the depth of the pipe line will give the ultimate security. And my friend you can't do repair works at that depth. Even subs can't dive that deep. The pipes need to take out. And maintainance is period with a defined life span.

Constructing the pipeline through sea will still be cheaper compared to laying a pipeline in mountains with sub-zero temperature and little oxygen.

Its not a new funda, many countried have built undersea pipelines in busies sea trade routes.

There is a stark difference b/w TAPI & IPI in terms of safety. On the one hand IPI project will be Internationally boycotted by all nations (b'coz of sanctions on Iran) but on the other hand the world superpower US itself acted as the mediator for the TAPI project.

+ IPI pipeline, if made, would have gone through some of the most troubled regions of Pakistan (Baluchistan) whereas TAPI will be much more safer as it will pass through Norther Afghanistan (much safer as Taliban is confined to south) & Northern Pakistan, which will be more safer than the Southern bordering regions of Afghanistan.

Thus, people who say that India din't go for IPI pipeline b'coz of US pressure are not wholly correct as Security was a major concern vis-a-vis IPI.

As for the undersea construction issue, read this:

1. Will this be the first thing India is doing and US is opposing ??? I think not. They are looking for their interests and we should do the same. And more over enery is need of our economy. So one one should object and we shouldn't care of the objections. Isarel the harden enemy of Iran hasn't say that much when we compare to US's stand. I think our international policy can pull this off. Even under sanctions no one objects the payment through food, grains and other civil needs. We can have a option to repay gas in these terms. So even with respecting sanctions we can do. It will just piss of US a little bit but do they care when they supply Pak milletry hardware ???

Although we might have to face a tough international pressure as of now but I think things will change in next 2/3 years. A solution will come out to correct crisis. Nobody is expecting to have this tension for decades.

2. So you want to say its hard for anyone with the intentions to blow off the pipe to travel few hundred kilometres and sabotage ??? These idiots came India throgh boat for 26/11. How hard it would be for them to do it in their own country ???
Even ignore that , are we planning to take Pakistan's word ??? I think the acid test of trust turned negative long ago.
And this is just a news. You can find same affirmations for IPI project too. Final go will be only when the supplier country takes the responsibility and not Pakistan. Even Iran wasn't ready to accept that. How we are going to do that ???
Anything passing through anywhere from Pakistan is giving Pak a hostage bargaining point. I am not at all in favour of that.

3 most of the things I write are in the link you post. It mentions pipleline option on continental shallow bed. It will be costly but secure. And Pak can't object it as its internationally allowed. To destroy it you need to be in war. No rug tug terrorist can do that at that depth.

As far as I belive IPI pipleline was abandoned for Iran's refusal to assurance and US offer of nuclear deal. According to your article India-Iran direct pipeline will cost 5 billions shared by both paries ie 2.5 each.
We need to pay transit to Pak for over land pipelines - 500-700 millions year and both pipelines costing 3/4 billions each. And just go throgh the suggested guarding measures it will cost a good fortune too. Like Pak won't do the fetching on its own. We have to share costs.
So I think the sea pipeline will cost 1/1.5 billions more but it will be worth of that. And we can further reduce cost by extending pipe from indian port to Pak. Lets see will they trust us and pay transit ??? I think you know the answer ;)
The moment the tensions in gulf reduce I think India will go with this.

On closing note I read a article nearly 2 years ago in which India ask Iran for assurance on which Iran refuses. Then Pak ask Iran to give that assurance but Iran refuse that too. So if supplier isn't trusting transit throgh Pak why should we ??? It won't be different for second case.

( you are welcome to correct me if I am wrong :D )

IF AND ONLY IF all the four nations are able to pull this miracle off successfully then it can pay rich peace dividends to both india and Pakistan. It can also fill the trust deficit to some extent in other words it may well be the founding stone of Indo-Pak peace processes.

India should not be given access to pipelines through Pakistan.

Qatar also have huge gas reserve, we can make undersea pipeline to Qatar for the time now and later if the sanctions eases we can have branch to Iran to import Iranian and Turkmenistani gas

Yeah, you can do everything! How about slicing Qatar from Arab world and merging it with mainland India?
