India Chooses to Lease MQ-9B Guardian UAVs

MQ-9 SeaGuardian drone
The Indian Navy has leased a pair of MQ-9 SeaGuardian drones that come with an expensive price tag as instead of buying them.
A report by Hindustan Times states that two MQ-9Bs have been leased for one year. The aircraft arrived in India in early November and the Navy began undertaking missions last week. Capable of operating at an altitude of 40,000 feet, the MQ-9B UAVs have an endurance of 30 hours and a range of more than 5,000 nautical miles.
The drones will be based at the Naval Air Station Rajali in Tamil Nadu, which is also home to the Indian Navy’s fleet of P-8I long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft.
New Delhi has been mulling at MQ-9 purchase for long. It wanted to acquire 30 drones for $3 billion. After the U.S. eased restrictions on the export of its military grade drones with maximum speed below 800kmph, India was expected to go ahead with the contract. The matter was reportedly even discussed during the recent U.S.-India 2+2 ministerial dialogue in New Delhi.
The country has lately been encouraging leasing of military equipment, and had even introduced it as another category in its Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020 that came into effect on October 1. Aside of being a cheaper option, leasing provides means to possess and operate an asset without owning it. It may be preferred in cases where there are time constraints and where the capability is needed for a specific time or would be under-utilised if procured.

LEASE...
another myth in the war history of the world.

Its smart as its a unarmed tool for reconnaissance. The navy is getting hands on experience of its utility and the armed forces can compare it to other drones in its armory.
Also its usefulness as compared to satellite imagery is also being made , without spending billions.
Suppose after buying, India finds it not so useful, then its 3 b usd Down the drain.
Also development of indigenous drones are being immensely aided by this user experience.

Are you not familiar with the Indian arms procurement drama and time schedule ?
This effectively bypassed all the tendering and associated court cases and time wastage.
If you want to give stupid reasons, i cant help you.

Why not claim India is so poor that it can lease instead of buy? Must be China policy of war of attrition in ladakh seeing the effect on India arm budget. :enjoy:

And US is also stupid enough to agree the lease. I guess there maybe condition behind forcing IAF to buy a certain number after lease period is up.

Money is the factor. Read my reply again. I can draw in crayons to explain if you want ?
In a dictatorship, the government does not have to worry about its people and can spend any amount on anything without any consequences. As a Chinese you can understand that. If xi wants , tomorrow he can double the defence budget and face no resistance. Like in 62 , your soldiers were well fed , while millions of ordinary Chinese were dying in famines . Thats not how a democracy works.

As you say in a "dictatorship" like China, it spend 1.9% of gdp on military, 6.6% on public health. but in a "democracy" like India, it spend 6.8% of gdp on military,1.2% on public health, so which goverment "does not have to worry about its people and can spend any amount on anything without any consequences"??
If India cut some military expenditure to improve public health, India people's life level will be not that low.
According to FAO estimates in ‘The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World, 2020 report, 189.2 million people are undernourished in India. But still Indian goverment exports more than 20 milliion tons of grain in order to gain foreign exchange to pay for weapons bought from other country.
sarcasm??

The simplest and cheapest solution will be for Modi to return all the land that was China and back to China with dignity and win the goodwill of China.

Or do it the hard way.

Those land will still be returned to China.
But with Modi first crawling 3 times around Tiananmen square.
