India, China joint army exercise in November
The Indian Army has firmed up dates for a joint exercise with the Chinese Peoples Liberation Army (PLA).
The exercise will be held from November 04 to November 14 at the Chengdu Military Region in China.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is also expected to visit China towards the end of the year. He may also interact with the Chinese side earlier on the sidelines of the East Asia summit in Brunei in October.
This comes at a time of recurring news reports of PLA troops intruding into Indian territory in both Ladakh as well as Arunachal Pradesh.
The exercise is expected to focus on Counter Insurgency and Counter Terrorism operations. The Indian Army will be fielding troops from the Sikh Light Infantry.
The dates were finalized over talks held between the two armies in New Delhi over the last two days, with representatives from the Indian Armys Eastern Command also present at the meeting with PLA officials.
The two armies first conducted a joint exercise in China in December, 2007 at Kunming in China. The last time they exercised together was in 2008 during Exercise Hand in Hand when 137 PLA troops from the 1st Company of Infantry Battalion of Chengdu Military Area Command trained with troops from 8 Maratha Light Infantry at Belgaum.
