India has become world's fifth largest military spender after the expenditure grew around 8.5 per cent in 2016. According to figures released by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), India spent $55.9 billion in 2016.

Here are 10 things to know about the findings:
  1. US remains the world's largest military spender with a growth of 1.7 per cent between 2015 and 2016 increasing the expenditure to $611 billion.
  2. China's military expenditure has increased by 5.4 per cent and is now $215 billion. However, the growth rate is much lower than the previous years.
  3. After China, third in line, is Russia with $69.2 billion and an increase of 5.9 percent.
  4. Saudi Arabia dropped to the fourth position in 2016 after its spending dropped by 30 per cent despite continued involvement in regional wars.
  5. The list of top 15 spenders include Japan, South Korea and Australia. Pakistan, with its $9.93 billion expenditure, does not figure in the top 15 list.
  6. Military expenditure in Western Europe rose for the second consecutive year and was up by 2.6 per cent.
  7. In 2016, the global military spending accounted for 2.2 per cent of the worldwide GDP.
  8. Military spending as a share of GDP, was highest in the Middle East with an average of 6.0 per cent. However, data for all Middle Eastern countries was not available.
  9. In Asia and Oceania (Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and others), military expenditure rose by 4.6 per cent in 2016. Spending levels are related to the many tensions in the region such as over territorial rights in the South China Sea.
  10. "The growth in US military expenditure in 2016 may signal the end of a trend of decreases in spending, which resulted from the economic crisis and the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan and Iraq," the report said.

Cue the accusations of most of China's defence spending being "hidden".

. . .
Officially Chinese say they spend something like $125 billion on defence.

Less than 3 times India's defence spending, despite having an economy over 5 times larger?

We are really lagging when it comes to defence spending as a % of GDP. Even worse when it comes to defence spending as a % of the government budget, considering how enormous China's government budget is.

bhai hum ghareeb log hain humy maafi do

No sir you spend too much compared to us as from the percentage of Economy or size of economy. We have 2.5 TR usd Economy and we Spend 55 bn USD. You have a size of 250 bn USD economy and you spend 10 bn USD. It is just too much.

Yes, China spends lower % of GDP than India does. But again, each nations are unique and have different needs. As far I see China has no serious enemy. While India has Pakistan to deal with.

.
India's problem is that it has to even buy nuts, bolts and screws from outside, it forces its expenditure up

Pakistan's budget is about 10billion, then we have a couple of billion dedicated to our missile and nuclear programme and occasionally seek additional government funds to purchase, sub's etc

What Pakistan has achieved on such a budget is frankly miraculous.
We have SLCMs and MIRV, our own jet fighter programme, cruise missiles, air launched cruise, TWNs and a big and expanding nuclear programme things countries with much larger budgets can only dream of

For all the limitations our engineer's, scientists, military should be congratulated for what they achieved when countries with so much more have to run abroad for everything

.
And despite that India is parading these giant color pencils to attack Pakistan.

They are for defending and not for attacking. India has NFU with nukes, while Pakistan has no such policy. To overcome Pakistan's lower threshold on nukes. India has no option but to spend more on defence than Pakistan.

Why wasting money... When youare in no direct conflict/war... China can use other things as weapon if a conflict arise... No need Hundreds of Billions of spending when you can use it in other more urgent/interesting investment...

No one will attack or declare war on China in those incoming decades... At least not the superpowers... maybe a little regional stupid country...but who knows...
