Indian PM Narendra Modi's first trip to Dhaka since his election win last May has been dominated by the deal to permanently fix the contours of a border which stretches some 4,000 kilometres along India's eastern flank and thereby solving a long standing problem between India and Bangladesh and ending the sufferings of tens of thousands of people.
The historic land pact will finally allow people living in border enclaves to choose their nationality after decades of stateless limbo and solve Indo-Bangla. border issues.
More than 50,000 people currently live in tiny enclaves - citizens of one country but located in the other. Under the agreement, both sides will swap the enclaves enabling their citizens to finally reside in their own countries.
Foreign secretaries of the two nations on Saturday signed a protocol and exchanged instruments of ratification to make operational the Land Boundary Agreement (LBA) in the presence of visiting Indian prime minister Narendra Modi and Bangladeshi premier Sheikh Hasina.
"We have resolved a question that has lingered since independence. Our two nations now have a settled boundary," Mr Modi said at a press conference.
In an effort to further deepen bilateral ties, India announced a $US 2 billion line of credit to Bangladesh.
