India bags mining rights for 3 Afghan mines

If Indian investment in Afghanistan brings positive results and prosperity towards the region, it will reduce the perceived threats of Indian economic hegemony in the minds of pakistanis. Lets hope this will prove to be trust building effort for encouraging economic partnership of India with Pakistan in not to distant future. Subcontinental countries need to invest more in Afghanistan and resgional economic cooperation is a must if we want to survive the onslaught of the new era where "global recession" is the real weapon of mass destruction.

Afghanistan has trillions of dollars worth of minerals which can make the country a rich place. It is time for Afghans to start digging them up and stop being a burden on neighboring countries.

I think Chinese are doing same stuff in your country, please stop them first and dig it yourself.

Afghanistan Awards Indian Group Hajigak Iron-Ore Mine Rights

Nov. 28 (Bloomberg) -- President Hamid Karzai’s government offered India a new strategic role in Afghanistan by awarding mining rights for the country’s biggest iron deposit to a group of Indian state-run and private companies.

Karzai and his cabinet awarded three of four blocks at the Hajigak ore deposit to seven companies that bid with support from India’s government, and offered the final block to Canada’s Kilo Goldmines Ltd., Ministry of Mines policy director Abdul Jalil Jumriany said by phone. Ministry spokesman Jawed Omar confirmed the decision.

India’s government backed the group, led by state-owned Steel Authority of India Ltd. and NMDC Ltd., to widen the country’s strategic presence in Afghanistan, which Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said is essential for Indian security. By adding a multi-billion dollar mining project to its aid programs, India will join China as one of Afghanistan’s main foreign investors, an elevation of its role that analysts say is likely to upset its main rival, Pakistan.

Hajigak, a series of rugged mountain ridges 100 kilometers (60 miles) west of Kabul, holds an estimated 1.8 billion metric tons of ore and is the biggest mining project on offer in a country that the U.S. government estimated last year holds $1 trillion in untapped minerals. Afghan Mines Minister Wahidullah Shahrani will visit London Dec. 6 to promote four copper and gold deposits that are among the next tenders the government will offer, Omar said.

‘Huge Investment’

The Hajigak deal will bring “huge investment” and also will be “an important step in developing our vast mineral resources which is the key to the sustainability of economic growth in the country,” Shahrani said in a statement issued by his office.

The Indian group that will mine Hajigak includes state- owned Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd., and private-sector companies JSW Steel Ltd., Jindal Steel & Power Ltd., Monnet Ispat Ltd. and JSW Ispat Steel Ltd.

Monnet Ispat Managing Director Sandeep Jajodia said his company had not received official word of the Hajigak award. “By taking such a quick decision, the Afghan government has given a strong message that it wants to welcome development and investment,” he said in a phone interview.

For India, the Afghan decision “will pave the path for more such formations bidding jointly for overseas assets,” he said. “It is something that China has done for years,” and “this success clearly shows that Indian companies can join hands to tackle China’s might,” Jajodia said.

Aynak Copper

The Indian group’s bid includes an offer to build a power plant and invest $1 billion in a railroad to export the ore, Jumriany said in a phone interview in Kabul. India has said it is exploring a rail line from Hajigak to the Iranian port of Chabahar.

Those plans would place the Hajigak project alongside the Aynak copper mine, being developed by the state-owned Metallurgical Corporation of China, as one of Afghanistan’s two largest investments.

India’s role in Afghanistan so far has included $1 billion in aid since 2002, mainly devoted to construction work and development projects. An expanded Indian presence is likely to upset rival Pakistan, according to analysts such as Bashir Ahmed, a senior fellow and retired army brigadier at the Institute of Regional Studies in Islamabad.

Singh and Karzai signed a strategic partnership agreement last month that officials of their governments say will allow for Indian training of Afghan troops. India has vowed to maintain and expand India’s role in Afghanistan as the U.S. seeks to end its main military presence there by 2014.

The government will soon open negotiations with Kilo and the Indian group to finalize contracts, Jumriany said. Unsuccessful bidders included India’s Corporate Ispat Alloys Ltd. and Iran’s Gol-e-Gohar Iron Ore Co. and Behin Sanate Diba Co.

Considering the size of Afghan resources and also considering the proximity of resources to India, i don't think India is going to let this opportunity go so easily. I bet most of these mines will be bought by Chinese and indian companies only. Also this consortium strategy is good as this way we will be the strongest contendors in almost all the cases. I hope GOI follows the same strategy in the up-coming tenders.

EPIC NEWS! Afghanistan has over 3 trillion dollars in ore and it seems India is in a great position to capture a huge percetsge of this vast source. Interesting that dispute being called "soft" and "ineffectual" MMS has pulled of YET ANOTHER significant diplomatic move.

.
Well, formally Iran's ambassador to Afghanistan told the media that Iran's Chabahar port is ready and have all stock equipments with international standards but our government turned deaf ear to him, may be because of uncle sam, but bro it doesn't mean we are against transit via Pakistan and there should be alternative to this route because on monthly basis we are facing hurdles due to NATO.

And I don't know why Pakistani companies are not interested in such project? participation of Pakistan in such projects will bring stability to both nations.

Pakistan is blessed with natural resources itself, & would rather utilize them first. Pakistan already has the Gwadar port operating, & will take care of its own self.

Indian resources are atleast getting processed and finished.

Unfortunatey most of them are hyped and the true ones are in insurgency prone regions making it all the more difficult.

people always keep saying that, but karzai has remained in power till now, US is not a fool, if they are leaving before 2014, they will have a plan to make sure that afghanistan doesn't falls in the hands of taliban......

Do you really think that the Americans are leaving? in 2014, or whenever? and that they are going to leave a vacuum behind.
International players will have an increasingly larger role in Afghanistan. And not necessarily in military terms. Russia and CARs will get a larger role. And so will Iran, with assent from the Afghans and tacit acceptance from USA. :)

Way to go india and this consortium looks very powerful...

India is developing Chabahar port in Iran its very close to the mines. Also, India is building rail link to Chabahar from these mining areas. From Chabahar these ores will be unloaded in Gujrat for our use.

This is what you call long term strategic thinking, while Pakistan cries as usual, India is building a strong base in Afghanistan and opening up new routes. In the long term this will ensure India's presence in the country and be a constant irritant to Pakistan which can only sit and watch.
