India arrests 1,000 ahead of Bollywood film launch

Updated at: 1145 PST, Wednesday, February 10, 2010
MUMBAI: Police have arrested more than 1,000 right-wing Hindu activists in the Indian city of Mumbai as part of increased security to stop violence over the release of a new Bollywood film.

"Right now, 1,000 plus people have been arrested. Most of them (the arrests) are preventive," senior officer Devan Bharti told foreign news agency on Wednesday.

The arrests come amid a simmering row between top actor-producer Shah Rukh Khan, who stars in the film "My Name Is Khan", and a local hardline Hindu nationalist party, the Shiv Sena.

Shiv Sena leaders have called on Khan to apologise after comments he made regretting the absence of any Pakistan players in the Indian Premier League Twenty20 cricket tournament starting next month.

It is a defense forum, please do not post trolls.

The above news proves that there is rule of law in India and anybody taking law into its hand is punished.

Also, The "hard line Hindu" nationalist party's worker get arrested and security of its leaders withdrawn for protests it is doing.

This talks tall about India's Secularism. That in a Hindu majority country, leaders of Hindu party get arrested for protecting business interest of a Muslim actor. The government is spending crores for its release. This is because we don't divide our people or see them through the prism of religion.

Why are Shiv Sena so afraid of SRK? It is so immature to ban Pakistan from playing Cricket matches. Shiv Sena fanatics are creating more harm than good, and making a fool out of the whole nation.

Sad.

Shiv Sena isn't afraid of SRK. They are using him as a topic of harassment for political points even though the tables have turned and they are in fact promoting his movie. I wouldn't be surprised if those 1000 people arrested, when released would immediately rush off to the local cinemas to stand in a queue to buy their tickets to the movie "My name is Khan" :D

Yup mixing sport and politics isn't good but the mood in India after 26/11 isn't too good either. If for example Japan was accused by China of sponsoring terrorist activities against China where hundreds of people were recently killed in China , do you believe that it will be safe for a Japanese sport team or players to play in China? Or would the Chinese selectors nominate Japenese players for a domestic sport in China shortly after the incident? Me'thinks not.

Fanatics such as Shiv Sena exists in all nations. Sometimes their ideologies make sense but in most instances they are rejected by mainstream society. It is no different in India
