Depends who is talking, in perspective of most people in India. Russia, Israel, and France are the only three countries that can truly be called India's allies with Japan taking the fence spot. Russia is the only country that has helped India even through the toughest of times when we were sanctioned to the neck by the international community.

Indians love the US over Russia. Without Russian help, India would be a failed state. But still worshipping the Yanks.

The US Task Force 74 of the US Seventh Fleet was deployed to the Bay of Bengal at the height of the 1971 Indo-Pak war . Led by the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, the deployment of the task force was seen as a show of force by USA in support of the beleaguered Pakistani forces, at a time that Indian forces were close to capturing Dhaka.

The US Task Force withdrew without a whimper from the Bay of Bengal after Russian (Soviet) submarines were dispatched to shadow the fleet and warn them to lay off.
