In the first-ever major humanitarian assistance to China, India on Saturday began airlifting relief material to the earthquake-hit neighbour.

An IAF IL-76 plane carried the first consignment of tents, cutting machines, blankets, water purifiers, generators and other relief material to Chengdu, capital of worst-hit Sichuan Province on Saturday afternoon.

The 36-tonne consignment, part of the $5 million humanitarian assistance pledged by India, was transfered to the affected areas immediately after its arrival, the Indian Embassy said in Beijing.

Another IL-76 aircraft will ferry relief material from Kanpur on Monday. The second consignment will include sleeping bags, wheel-chairs, stretchers, cranes and winches to be used in getting to people trapped under debris in the worst earthquake to hit China since 1976.

"There could be more humanitarian flights if requested by the Chinese authorities," officials said in Delhi.

At least 28,000 people have been confirmed dead in the severe earthquake, measuring 6.8 on Richter scale, that rocked China on Monday.

While receiving the relief material, Ran Jinjun, a senior official of Chinese Civil Aviation Ministry, expressed deep gratitude to India for the "timely assistance."

It is unfortunate that you give China credit only in the field of manufacture of such basic items and nothing more.

India also produces such items amongst many others, including sophisticated stuff.

Pakistan does not produce these items because it is hi tech? Is that the reason why Pakistan has still not come to help their only, much loved friend? I thought a friend in need, is a friend indeed! Where is the friendship for your friend who is in need?

When will you take the Chinese items that they must have donated to you back to them as a sign of long and dear friendship or will it remain as mere rhetoric?!

So, before you think you are smart, think it over, since you can be proved to be otherwise and made to eat crow.

BTW, India has also airlifted aid for Myanmar and India is the first country allowed to enter Myanmar. Thailand follows.

We can afford to give humanitarian aid and we shall always do so.

Pakistan sends two C-130 flights of relief goods to China

2008-05-16
ISLAMABAD, May 15 (APP): On the instructions of the federal government, National Disaster Management Authority has arranged to dispatch two C-130 flights containing relief goods for earthquake affected people of China.

The relief goods include tents, blankets, plastic mats, medicines and mineral water. The flights carrying the relief goods will depart for China early in the morning on Friday (May 16).

Senior officials of National Disaster Management Authority of Prime Minister's Secretariat, the Cabinet Division, Foreign Office and Chinese Embassy will see off the flights in a simple ceremony.

The President and the Prime Minister of Pakistan have already visited Chinese Embassy in Islamabad to express condolence and solidarity with the affected families and Chinese government.

If you could not digest India sending relief materials to your best friend then say it openly !!!
In unfortunate situation like these, it does not even matter if Japan, America or India have any testy relations with China. The Prime objective is "Help" with the materials that can be used accordingly!!!

.......We can afford to give humanitarian aid and we shall always do so.

Pakistan send many C-130s to India after Gujarat’s earthquake and Indians also reciprocated by sending aid during 2005 quake in Pakistan…..

I don’t think that sending few C-130s or IL-76s on humanitarian missions will burden any country’s assets or question her affordability…anyone can afford it….also the post by Dhanraj suggests that Pakistan has already mobilised their aid for China…

Whether it were the earthquakes of India, Turkey and Iran or the Indian Ocean Tsunami, Pakistan has never hesitated to comeforth and always offered her assistance . As far as the ongoing Burmese crisis, the only reluctance to aid or the hurdle, is actually Burmese government itself. I am in a shock at the indifferent attitude of the ruling junta and feel sorry for the suffering masses…

i dont give China credit for only basic items but nearly 80% of the electronics imported in india and around the world! and that includes "sophisticated stuff"!
by the way, good to see GoI engaged in relief efforts, i thought india was their to destabilize and defame China through a variety of plans and the recent wave of riots in Tibet was one of these plans.:)

Some acts in different cultures are veiwed differently. Where u stand helping some one is to be kept in low profile and is taboo to be discussed. No wonder you are surprised!
Where as by virute of upbeating the (extended) help 'culture', I learned that India has also helped US during catrina. It was posted in similar fashion.
In my opinion help is not a subject to discuss.
Since, we have Indians on this forum so such threads will keep poping, infect they are getting better with inclusion of graphics.

aid given to any country is humanitarian, it has nothing to do with politics, there shuld not be any publicity stunts carried out while givin out aid to the needy, like many Countries r doin right now, i wuld not like to mention them, but their is an old sayin that goes somethin like this: "IF U HELP SOMEONE DO SO BY NOT LETTIN UR OTHER HAND KNOW THAT U HELPED SOMEONE", but today brotha's the worlds is completely somethin else, people tell the world first that they r givin aid, n then they give out aid to the needy, wuts the damn point givin out help like this:what:

Dude, I don't know if you've been reading the news or not, but...

India is falling head-over-heals to improve relations with China.
The current administration considers Dalai Lama a liability, but because of his international standing, they are unable to say a word against him.

I mean comeon....

With tens of thousands of quake affected people in China's southwest Sichuan province rendered homeless, Beijing [Images] has asked New Delhi to rush more tents and portable shelters for the victims.

In a swift response, India will use its fleet of giant IL-76 to rush thousands of tents and potable shelters to Chengdu, a defence ministry official said in New Delhi.

Three more IL-76 flights will airdash these items to the quake affected people on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from IAF's Kanpur base.

"Tents are being procured on emergency basis from the Kanpur based Ordnance factories and packed and flown to Chengdu," officials said.

The flights from India have been given the codename OP Sahayta.

One more IL-76 landed in Chengdu on Wednesday carrying clean portable water for the quake victims. India has so far airlifted 75 tonnes of relief material for the quake affected people, officials said, adding that there was also requests for rushing in wheel chairs.
