India-Afghanistan air corridor plan entered implementation phase on May 31, 2017 as the first flight is scheduled to take place on 15th June.

The India- Afghanistan air corridor project which was initiated by H.E President Ghani last year, entered operationalization stage today with the signing of an MoU between the CEOs of Ariana Airlines and Afghanistan Chambers of Commerce and Industries (ACCI) in presence of Ajmal Ahmady, senior economic advisor to the President of Afghanistan and officials and representatives from ACCI, MAIL MoCI and the business community.

Addressing the signing ceremony, held in ACCI headquarters, ACCI deputy chairman Khan Jan Alkozay thanked H.E President Ghani for championing the cause of the private sector by providing them a platform to increase their exports to India.

He highlighted the potential of this project in empowering traders to export quality and much sought for Afghan products to the vast Indian market by air with minimum costs while circumventing the obstacles faced in the land route. He also extended special thanks to Ajmal Ahmady and his team for making this significant project a reality.

Mr. Alkozay requested the traders to consider the Indian food and commercial standards and prepare their consignments to be exported for June 15th.

Speaking on the occasion, Ariana CEO Captain Nadir Omar announced the dates for first two cargo flights to New Delhi. According to Mr. Omar the first flight will depart Kabul for New Delhi on June 15 while the second planned flight will depart from Kandahar on June 20, 2017. He reassured the government and the business community of Ariana’s readiness in implementing this program.

According to a statement by the Office of Economic Adviser to the President of Afghanistan, based on the terms of the MoU signed between ACCI and Ariana, the traders will only pay $0.20 per kg for exporting their goods to India while the rest will be paid by the government of Afghanistan as an incentive to promote Afghan exports to India. This program will also considerably reduce the cost of importing goods from India by air to only $0.40 per kg. Traders from both countries will benefit from this program.

The first flight under the dedicated India-Afghan air freight corridor will become operational in the next couple of days, thereby, making trade easier between the two countries.

The development is significant as Pakistan does not allow use of its land for trade between Afghanistan and India.

“The first flight (under the dedicated India-Afghan air freight corridor) is likely to operate in next couple of days and will carry Indian goods to Afghanistan and their products to India,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Gopal Baglay said today.

The concept was discussed between the two countries during the visit of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani last year.

It is aimed at providing the private sector in Afghanistan with a platform to increase their exports to India.

The project was also envisaged to enable traders to export Afghan products to the vast Indian market by air with minimum costs while circumventing the obstacles faced in the land route, which was denied by Pakistan.

Mr. Baglay has said the flight will fly over the Pakistan airspace as it is a civil plane.

Mr. Baglay also said there would be a warm reception to the flight which would bring to Afghan products such as dry fruits to Delhi.

The first flight will be run by Afghanistan’s Ariana Airlines.

He also said that the frequency of the flights under the project would be determined depending on commercial viability as it was a business venture which is supported greatly by the two governments.

An aircraft packed with 60 tons of Afghan plants with medicinal uses marked the opening of the first air cargo corridor between Afghanistan and India on Monday.

The cargo, worth about $5 million dollars, was the first in what officials from the two countries hope will be many flights allowing Afghan and Indian companies to bypass Pakistan, which strictly limits the shipment of goods by land between India and Afghanistan and is often involved in border disputes with them.

“Our aim is to change Afghanistan to an exporter country,” Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said at a ceremony marking the inaugural flight.

“As long as we are not an exporter country, then poverty and instability will not be eliminated.”

The cargo service aims to improve landlocked Afghanistan’s links to markets abroad and boost the growth prospects of its agricultural and carpet industries while it battles a deadly Taliban insurgency, Indian officials have said.

“We will continue to assist you in various ways as this corridor expands and grows into a network of cargo flights as per demand of the market,” India’s ambassador to Afghanistan, Manpreet Vohra, told Ghani.

“There are bound to be some teething problems in any major initiatives such as this but my embassy and my government is committed to working together with your team to resolve all issues that may pop up from time to time.”

Afghanistan depends on the Pakistani port of Karachi for its foreign trade. It is allowed to send a limited amount of goods overland through Pakistan into India, but imports from India are not allowed along this route.

Border crossings are often closed as Afghan and Pakistani forces clash over the disputed border, and Afghan farmers have complained of fruit and other produce rotting without other options for shipping.

Next week, a second flight to India is scheduled to depart from the southern city of Kandahar, carrying 40 tons of dried fruit.

The air corridor between Afghanistan and India was formally inaugurated by President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani today as cargo worth $5 million is expected to arrive in New Delhi today.

The second flight as part of the air corridor is expected to leave Afghanistan in a week time and will carry cargo worth $2 million from the southern Kandahar province of Afghanistan.

Speaking during the inauguration of the air corridor, President Ghani thanked the Indian Prime Minister for the support of the Indian government for turning the plan into the reality.

He said Kabul and New Delhi will turn the barriers into opportunities as he emphasized that the government of national unity’s aim is to turn the country into a state that exports commodities to outside the country.

President Ghani further added that the peace and stability would be difficult and impossible to achieve in the absence of economic stability in the country which can only be achieved with the increase in exports.

The Embassy of India in Kabul says the first flight will carry cargo load of around 62 tons and the second flight will leave Kandahar for New Delhi in the near future.

The first flight of the air corridor will be received by the external minister of India in New Delhi.]

The second flight from Afghanistan under a new air corridor with India, created to help the two countries to boost trade without depending on land routes through Pakistan, took off from Kandahar with 40 tons of fruits and vegetables on Saturday.

President Ashraf Ghani inaugurated the direct air cargo link and the first flight carried 60 tons of hing (asafetida) from Kabul to New Delhi on June 19.

Subsequently, a flight from Delhi to Kabul transported 100 tons of goods, mainly pharmaceuticals and medical equipment.

The flight from Kandahar carried 10 tons of fruits and 30 tons of vegetables and medicinal plants. India’s consul general in Kandahar, NP Singh, and the governor of the Afghan province were present at the airport when the flight took off.

The idea of creating the air freight corridor was put forward by Ghani during his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September last year. The two leaders reached an agreement on the air cargo service when they met in Amritsar in December.

The air corridor aims to enhance the annual volume of trade between the two countries, which currently stands at around $700 million.

Landlocked Afghanistan depends on neighbouring countries for all its imports and exports. Even before relations between Kabul and Islamabad became strained over accusations of harbouring militants, Pakistan has stymied Afghanistan’s efforts to trade with India.

After Afghanistan and Pakistan signed a transit trade agreement in 2010, Islamabad allowed Afghan trucks to carry goods up to the Indian border but barred them from ferrying any Indian goods through Pakistani territory.

The Afghan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI) said the medicinal plants carried on the first flight were valued at $11 million.

There are plans for up to five flights a week from Kabul and Kandahar to New Delhi.
