Economist accuses India of censorship over Kashmir map
By Sanjoy Majumder
BBC News, Delhi
The Economist magazine has accused India of hostile censorship after being forced by the country's authorities to cover up a map in its latest edition.

India says the map, which depicts the disputed area of Kashmir, is incorrect because it shows the region as divided between Pakistan, India and China.

Kashmir is claimed by both India and Pakistan in its entirety but has been divided since 1948.

It has been the cause of two wars between them.

Nearly 30,000 copies of the latest edition of The Economist are being distributed in India with a blank white sticker placed over a map of Kashmir.

The map was to be used to illustrate a cover story on the border between India and Pakistan which it describes as the world's "most dangerous".

Indian officials forced the magazine to take the step because the map did not show all of Kashmir as being part of India.

The Economist says it was merely reflecting the current effective border, adding that India is more intolerant on the issue than either Pakistan or China.

Indian readers, it said, could face the political reality of the situation on the ground unlike its government.

The authorities in India routinely target the international media, including the BBC, on the issue of Kashmir's borders if the media do not reflect India's claims.

talk about a stinking curry breath of empty hot air. . .

i doubt they'll change anything just because a few gloomy indians make a fuss and throw a hissy-fit over it. That's why they are imposing a block of these editions unless they have a sticker (for whatever that's worth)

i welcome the news, because it just shows agains to the world how delusional these bhartis really are....even at a time when anti-indian sentiment is ripe and very deep-rooted in Kashmir (on both sides of the LoC)

Accused of what?? It is a proven fact..And also the violence in Kashmir started after brutal crack down in 1987..Pakistani millitants did not infiltrate the area until 1989 and the once again the so-called millitants were actually kashmiri citizen who ran across the border for saftey and returned armed to take revenge..not any different than the saga of mukhti bahini in east pakistan..india cannot fool the world for too long..india is a kingdom of lies..its social fabric promotes people to be opportunist by lie and deceit and appraise them as tactical abilities rather than criminal behaviour

. . . .
Kashmir is ours. All of it. Anybody who wishes to operate in India will have to go by Indian policy. Be it Blackberry, Google or Economist. Period.

Cry me a river.

A river of blood for India's karma.

Why do some Pakistanis pretend that they don't eat curry?

Besides you should be happy about this censorship. The very same map also showed Baluchistan as a disputed region. You already have millions of Indians harping on about Baluchistan issue as it is, you don't want more Indians to know about this issue trust me. If Pakistan was not busy with all the terror attacks in their country am sure they would have taken up the issue with the economist too.

The difference is that Balochistan is regarded as Pakistan's territory by the whole world, but Kashmir is a disputed territory as per UN mandates. So I don't see why anyone would equate Balochistan with Kashmir. I think the Indian government should let the magazine show Kashmir divided into Pakistan Administered Kashmir, Indian Administered Kashmir & Chinese Administrative Kashmir. It is reflective of the ground realities. What point is the Indian government trying to prove when it shows the whole Kashmir as India's, when clearly India has no control past the LOC?

different color does not means it is disputes, it is merely a way to show the place mentioned in the article.

The first undelined is just being racial of you.And considered as an insult. Reporting the post.

If any Co wants to do businness on a foreign land, it has to obey the laws of foreign land. Just as simple as a China and google Story. Why hypocratism when it comes to India?
If the Economist wants to sell their editions in India, they have to go by Indian rules, by not by thier so called colonials rules of the past.

India is no expcetion, if you are not aware off. there are numerous incidents when many countries including your blood shared born chinese friends did that to many companies.

Oh don't get me wrong, am not drawing any parallels between Baluchistan and Kashmir, I was just mentioning how they have shown Baluchistan as a disputed region, which is wrong. Every country has rules and regulations regarding what media can publish. And once in a while government likes to implement it.

Agree with that. In Indian school books, Kashmir is shown as J&K, Pakistan "Occ." Kashmir and Aksai Chin. So its not like people don't know about the ground reality. Makes you wonder what the Indian government was trying to achieve. Its most likely a case of someone registering a complain and then the authorities were compelled to take action.
