LAHORE: The basic reason for the crises in the country is the rapid increase in population, which needs to be resolved on an immediate basis. The Punjab government will have to take effective steps to control the increasing population in the province just as it took measures to control the dengue.
This views were shared by speakers at a public awareness seminar on the Role of family planning in view of Islam for the betterment of country. The seminar was jointly organised by Mir Khalilur Rahman Memorial Society (Jang Group of Newspapers), Population Welfare Department, Punjab, and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) at a local hotel here on Monday.
Chief Ministers Adviser Zakia Shahnawaz was the chief guest while Dr Saeed Elahi, parliamentary secretary for health, Punjab, Maulana Muhammad Hussain Akbar, the head of Minhajul Hussnain, Maulana Raghib Naeemi, Nazim-e-Aala Jamia Naeemi, Prof Dr Muhammad Hafeez, principal Atchison College, Dr Irfan Jameel, bishop of Lahore, Sohail Warraich, journalist, Francis Nadeem, Prof Dr Khawaja Amjad Saeed, principal Hailey College and others spoke on the occasion. A question-answer session was also held in which the participants from different cities of the country asked questions from the experts.
Begum Zakia Shah Nawaz said the population control should be the top priority of government but lack of funds was the basic hurdle in this regard. She said that soon after the provincial government got funds from the federal government, all kinds of work, including mass level awareness and field work in all parts of the Punjab, would start.
Dr Saeed Elahi said the population issue was the top agenda of the provincial government and now the government was paying more attention to the issue. He said that as per the new agenda of the Punjab government, the population issue was its first priority and new strategies and campaigns would be initiated as per the new agenda for the better control of increasing population.
Secretary Population Welfare Department Altaf Aziz said that non-Muslims had controlled their population by adopting Islamic procedures while the Muslims had left the practices. He said Ulema had to pay their role in educating the masses to control the population and added that agricultural land was disappearing rapidly because of the uncontrolled population.
Talking to the seminar participants, Sohail Warraich said that increasing population was the basic hurdle to the development of our country. He said most of the countrys development budget was consumed by the large population.
The Bishop of Lahore, Irfan Jameel, said that the masses had to adopt population control strategy as the country was already facing a shortage of finance and resources. He said a small family could easily survive even in difficult circumstances.
Host Wasif Nagi said the population of Lahore had reached the figure of 10 million and the Punjab government had to adopt an immediate strategy to control the population.
