Tarek Mehanna, a 29-year-old American who holds a doctorate in pharmacology, was convicted of supporting al-Qaeda by translating their documents into English and expressing sympathetic views toward them, and of conspiring to murder U.S. soldiers in Iraq. He read this statement to Judge George A. OToole during his sentencing on April 12, 2012.
Please do not forget he also traveled to Yemen to seek training in Al-Qaeda training camps and attempted to convert his indoctrination into action upon his return:
In his instructions, U.S. District Judge George O'Toole Jr. told them that in order to find Mehanna guilty of conspiracy to provide material support to al-Qaida, they must find that he worked "in coordination with or at the direction of" the terrorist organization. He said independent advocacy on behalf of the organization was not a violation of the law.
