The Congress leader was addressing a rally in Tumakuru ahead of the May 10 assembly election in the state.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday stopped his speech for a while as a mark of respect for azaan – the Islamic call to prayer – that was being offered at a mosque close to the venue of his public rally in Tumakuru in poll-bound Karnataka.

In a video shared by news agency ANI, senior Congress leader KC Venugopal can be seen tapping Gandhi's back, after which the ex-party president looks at Venugopal and nods, and halts his speech.

“…so I told you that the government's responsibility towards people is that…” says Gandhi before Venugopal taps the former's back, and the address is halted. The azaan, meanwhile, can be heard in the background.

At one point, the recently disqualified MP also puts a finger on his mouth, asking some Congress supporters who were raising a slogan, to keep quiet.

On several instances in the past, prime minister Narendra Modi, too, has stopped his speeches during azaan. Recently, however, KS Eshwarappa, a senior leader of the Karnataka unit of PM Modi's BJP, made a controversial remark on this Islamic call to prayer.

Karnataka, the only state in south India where the BJP has been in power, will poll on May 10, and votes will be counted three days later. While the saffron party is aiming to retain the state, the Congress is eyeing a return to power.

full respect is being given to religion by the both parties, Congress and BJP !

No, BJP is expected to lose badly in this election. You cannot have corrupt and communal leaders and always say the same " Hindu khatre mein hai " and expect to win without any development and progress especially in a well off state. Voters in state assembly elections in India do not care about national or international issues. They mainly care about the improvement in their daily lives.

Weird ploy.
Muslim population in Karnataka is small, so appeasement is futile

Such a hinduphobic gesture from Rahul "muslim appeasement" Gandhi

Amid the hectic Karnataka Assembly election campaign, a BJP MLA has raked controversy by warning that anyone speaking against Hindus or India will be shot.

The BJP legislator has been identified as Basavanagouda Patil Yatnal. He made the controversy while speaking during a public election rally in Vijayapura. "If you speak about our faith or about India or about Hindus. Then you will be shot (making hand gesture)," said Basavanagouda Patil Yatnal. Yatnal made the comment as he gave reference to slain mafia turned politician Atiq Ahmed, who was killed by three assailants while he was in UP police custody, and how criminals are dealt with in Uttar Pradesh.

The statement of Yatnal has gone viral wherein he implies those who speak ill about India, Hindus will be shot. Yatnal also said that the BJP government, if voted to power, will implement Yogi Adityanath's style of governance in Karnataka. "Anyone who speaks against India will be encountered. We will stop sending them to jail. Decision will be take on the road itself,"

Baba ji, as per NDTV, the CM favourite is Siddaramaiah of the Congress. Incumbent Bommai is second. No wonder Modi ji is making trip after trip to Karnataka and ruining our already ruined traffic situation. I think BJP ka patta saaf ho jayega iss baar

He's a good guy, imagine how different the subcontinent would be with Ghandi and Imran as leaders.

I think it's going to be a hung assembly. Congress and JDS will cobble coalition like last time. What needs to be seen is whether BJP will break it, also like last time.
