What's new

In Pakistan’s olive-rich tribal areas, lone oil plant begins operations

Has some one tried avocados? They grow in dry areas.

Yeah 2nd year trees in charsadda, 3rd year trees in sargodha and 4 year trees in rawalpindi. Mostly grafted but few dozen seedlings as well.

Thanks and yup all those can be planted. I have planted few samples and they are giving fruit. Apricots and plum have impressed me, also akhrot works well but its growth is slow. I am also thinking of seedless lemons next year. My relatives have also tried almonds and they worked perfectly.
The problem actually is a large scale plantation something like aroun 5 to 10 thousand plants. I heard there is an olive project in KPK and hope will get something done.

That's a huge undertaking, capital expenditure is going to be huge, better start small few hundreds every years.

Dont go with the flow bro.. Plant kiwi fruit, turkish figs, hybrid louqat and possibly avocadoalong with olive. U have land so use it wisely.
Except for louqat rest will be left aside for now and for louqat and figs u can fence in patches.
U can also plant sheesham and pine at boundary or demarcation edges.. In 1.5 to 2 decades they will pay of for everything u invest now. These if plant in a line can be irrigated with the easily available threaded gas pipe transformed into a long drip irrigation pipe
Thanks alot for the info. Actually my mountainous land is not rocky, there was a study conducted and its perfect for olives and other fruits like oranges, lemon, pear, peaches, apricots etc. My land is in dir and the problem is u cant have huge fruit farms without fence and security as ppl will destroy it and that is a huge cost. I was interested in olives because its bitter and no one bothers to take it. It also doznt require much water and maintenance.
I know they provide alot of help in ounjab but here i have submitted forms and affidavits and still not gotten a single plant.

Weather, land you should be in touch with PARC/NARC every year they import plants from Spain/Italy we planted almost 500 plants last year near south punjab and few hundred in KPK, hopefully they will start producing fruit in a couple of years.
you have any idea how much is small scale olive oil extraction and packing plant?

.
can i cultivate in rahim yar khan?
Depends upon which area... Ryk is very fertile towards guddu, khnpur, khanbela, baghobahar and even towards sanghi.. But the areas towards ondian border or if u go towards sindh via sanghi, kobar etc that is not that fertile a place...
U can definitely plant olives but kiwi or avocado needs to be looked into. There is no reason u cant plant figs as i know of figs trees in multan and bwp which has similar environment

Not yet, but let me get back because I am the one who floats the ideas, some business framework and rest of the things are handled by our dad and youngest brother.

He was talking about import of one such unit, I haven't seen the proposal or cash outlays because we are still few years away from sustainable production. Besides I am more interested in selling the olive as preserved/ready to eat instead of oil. Cash rich and highly profitable e.g; 1 kg of extra virgin olive oil costs between Rs.1200 to Rs.2000, pomace about Rs.900 to Rs.1200 while 1 kg of green preserved olive is sold at anything between Rs.2000 to Rs.3000, pizza and arabian food; there is one super store near my house which sells this item people from at-least 6 Km radius come to buy the item in season and all the stock is sold in less than a week. I'd prefer a supply chain/can processing of olives rather than cash intensive olive oil extraction unit, may be once we have enough produce we will look into it.

i had a plan for avacado but to find good plants is hectic and i dnt have enough info about it . kiwi is new for me.
figs are easy to cultivate

yes better idea than cash intensive plant!

can you share numbers) feasibility? and is quality on par with imported edible olive? have you run an experiment or something?

wait time for orchard is really long and cash intensive what farmers in karachi do is they along with saplings they sow 4 years walli alfafa market for alfa is good and yearly net profit ranges from 90k-120k that way all their expenses get covered but i dont think thats possible in other area of Pakistan its done in karachi because there is huge demand for alfafa.

How much is the tentative cost per 10 plants?

How many can be planted in 6-8 kanal of land.

How much time does it take to bear fruit in pakistani environment.

We have a small patch of barani land in KPK (rest sold off e.t.c) in KPK. We are trying to sell that patch of 6-8 kanal land but right now no one is interested at the price we asked.

I think it would be better if we use it for olive or some other plantation. The only problem is that we will have to hire someone from the family or someone to maintain it as we have moved to cities so olives or a low maintenance plant would be a good choice.

If it can grow in bajaur, then it can grow in my village.

Yaar my ideas are often crazy and wild (as my family puts it) can you imagine a 20 something pakistani student in a UK uni telling his grandfather/father that it'd be crazy to spend millions of ruppes in fixing the landscape of a tibba (un even) piece of land given to the airfoce officer as a gift, why don't you start logging/timber wood and import rosewood trees(shisham) through our family in india and wait for it to pay. Fortunately that crazy idea was bought now 21 years down the road, during the course of time he purchased two more murabbas (different places) only at the cutting of these tress (half of them) he is looking at over 2 billion ruppees income going all over the place with his "genius idea"

So it is again one of my crazy ideas, our olives are only two years old we have another couple of years for the phase, but I intend to have a study conducted about feasibility, quality and pricing may be 2021.

That my friend is, 4.5 months of crop/vegetable vs 5 years of olive sustainable production or 5-7 years of avocado, 6 years for ginseng, or 21 years for rose wood. Its all about economics and being able to sustains/wait for such a period.

I have run all sorts of cash flow discounting models but no matter what I do there is no way I could find any scenario where an uneven 200 kanals of land give 4 billion worth of income which is about 190 million a year or 85 million for each crop cycle. Friend of mine took my advise and planted eucalyptus trees on their tibba now they have completed one cycle of 9 years each tree sold for Rs.300,000 they are in the mid of second cycle and expanding to another murabba.

This land of ours, my beloved Pakistan, which we have raped for over 70 year our motherland is so loving/caring and giving that little care and it will make you rich beyond your imagination. You can grow any damn thing here, I experimented with raising grapes from seeds of Australian and South African imported grapes, can you imagine they sprouted and are in the second year of their life in my house.

Bhai I was the first one to experiment imported strawberry in our chak shehzad farmhouse, others use their for other activities, then broccoli. Never compromised on quality now we have fixed clients and most of our produce is book in advance, not even for family use.

If you are in Karachi you may try "rambutan" from Thailand/Malaysia mother of all lychees, you can often find them in empress market and Metro cash and carry selling at Rs.2,000 for a pound. It is all about ideas, sustainability and above all "neyat" and overcoming the temptation of short cuts.

Zulfiqar Bhai, there are three ways one to import plants yourself but its an expensive and cumbersome route and not feasible for small investor. The other is to buy from the market I have no idea about the price you may check with nurseries.

There is a third way, PARC/NARC giveaway free plant under Govt scheme the requirement is at-least 10 acre or 80 kanal of land, one has to you know find some link but their quality is very good. Entire Potohar belt along large portion of KPK has been certified by NARC/PARC suitable for olives.
