Friends:

Below is an important message to those Pakistanis who care - Why is it that after so many years, the Pakistan governments refuse to understand the role of economics in geo-strategy and why is it that Pakistani governments refuse to promote trade with China -- the message below should allow concerned readers to pay particular attention on this crucial deficit in over relations, a deficit that we neglect at our peril.

China, Pakistan: Old friends, new challenges
(People's Daily Online)

On Oct. 24, the China-Pakistan Cooperation Conference was held in Beijing. Dozens of officials and academics from China and Pakistan attended the one-day conference to explore opportunities for cooperation in multiple fields such as education and strategic research, energy resources exploration, investment and trade.

2011 is the China-Pakistan Friendship Year. As good neighbors, China and Pakistan have always maintained a good relationship since the foundation of bilateral ties not matter how the international circumstance has changed. Both sides have constantly attached great importance to the principles of mutual confidence, mutual respect and mutual assistance, establishing a partnership that can stand any test.

Furthermore, the healthy development of China-Pakistan relations not only corresponds to the basic interests of both countries but also has a significant influence in maintaining regional peace and promoting regional development.

China always gives priority to the development of China-Pakistan relationships and is willing to cooperate with Pakistan to deepen this all-round cooperation and create a brilliant future for both sides, Tsinghua University Vice President Xie Weihe said in the opening address.

Masood Kham, Pakistan's ambassador to China, also high appreciated the China-Pakistan relationship, saying that bilateral ties have a long history and the fates of two countries have been tightly interwoven. Pakistan always supports China's national interests respecting the sovereign independence and territorial integrity of China. Pakistan hopes to strengthen cooperation with China in various areas, including science, energy and education.

At the same time, Chinese academics also put forward their concerns. Though China and Pakistan have maintained good cooperation in political affairs, such as territorial and sovereignty issues, the economic cooperation has lagged far behind, said Ye Hailin, secretary–general of the South Asia Research Center of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

According to statistics, trade between China and Pakistan hardly reached 10 billion U.S. dollars in 2010 while, China-U.S. trade was 380 billion U.S. dollars; China-Japan trade, 300 billion U.S. dollars, and China-India trade, 61.7 billion U.S. dollars.

Looking back on history, we cannot ignore the international circumstances that have spurred the rapid and prosperous development of China-Pakistan diplomatic ties. But if we only united on political issues, this cooperation would be fragile and temporary. Therefore, in order enhance the permanent and healthy development of China and Pakistan, it is indispensable to develop internal attractiveness and make extensive non-political cooperation for both sides

Exactly what I have been saying all along - geopolitical interests are never static, and Pakistan's blind faith in Chinese "friendship" will be sadly broken should this continue to be ignored.

It's not about Pakistan's "faith" in China - rather it's about Pakistan's willful failure to cultivate deeper relations - Pakistanis seem not to understand the role of economics in their own pursuit of security and indeed, relevance.

This is puzzling enough for Chinese to go "WTF?"

The fundamental problem, is that the current Zardari government (and other politicians) are either afraid or unwilling to carry out vital economic reforms.

Pakistan is the 6th largest country in the world by population, with a highly educated middle class.

Pakistan has enormous economic potential, but the current politicians are unwilling to develop it. Mostly for political reasons, for example on tax reform.

Everything is not at fault at the Zardari government,it's just an easy scapegoat for every misery that Islamabad faces.

Firstly I think it is not willful; Pakistan is truly abysmal in its policies through a lethal combination of incompetence, ignorance and ignominy, and the results of this are about to hit home HARD.

Secondly, it is not just China, but the whole damn world is saying Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, and thinking even worse.

I said "and other politicians". I was basically referring to the current set of people, who are calling the shots in the Pakistani system.

And yes, the fault ultimately lies at the top. If you say Zardari doesn't have the power to change things, then that is simply another failing on his part.

I have high hopes that the next Pakistani administration will be able to take the economy in the right direction.

wish you were wrong and I could say something

If you go through the economy board, you will find that TT have raised this issue repeatedly - Even otday, there is no government effort to push for greater economic cooperation and TRADE - successive Pakistani governments have neglected trade and economic cooperation with China - it is amazing that one party is saying, please trade and have deeper relations, while the other party, the party that most needs the relationship, is seemingly asleep at the wheel -- and really, it will take an all out government push to get things moving --- it's not just trade but manufacturing that has to be developed - Chinese brands, manufactured in Pakistan, jobs for greater numbers of Pakistanis - but so far monopoly business.
