Importance of Iran-Pakistan-India pipeline

US is very strongly against it and the carrot of cheap Turkmenistan gas some time in the future is being dangled to frustate Iran gas pipeline project. Let us wait and see.
[/QUOTE]
Infect both india and pakistan are under US pressure to drop this project and turkmenistan gas is unrealisable because unstable conditions of afghanistan

With so many economic interests tied together with each other, why would either side want to go to war if the Kashmir issue is resolved?? Aside from Kashmir, there is nothing left to spill blood over.

India and Pakistan are still far from a solution on Kashmir. Gas is a buyer's market. India has other options besides Iran for natural gas, like Myanmar. I agree with your point that Kashmir aside we have little to quarrel about. But, until the problem is resolved sticking to the tanker fleet would be a wise decision.

LOL, nah mate. I read in some reports, that India would have a surplus of gas in due time. There have been HUGE finds all over the country in gas and oil. I did not say oil, i said gas.

But anyways, i am all for the IPI line.
Bay of Bengal seems to have huge deposits, estimated at 20-30 trillion m2. Thats 6 times the size of Daulatabad gasdeposits in Turkmenistan!

But it might take decades to develop gasfields, offshore drillings haven't been very fruitful sofar.

Tehran tells Delhi: accept our gas price or we go to Pakistan

ANUPAMA AIRY
Monday, February 05, 2007

NEW DELHI, FEB 4: Iran has warned that it will strike a bilateral deal with Pakistan for gas supply if India does not agree to the price sought during discussions among the three countries in January.

Iran’s final offer of selling 60 million standard cubic meters of gas a day to India and Pakistan stands at $4.93 per mmbtu through the $7 billion tri-nation gas pipeline. Earlier, it had sought $7.17 per mmbtu. India and Pakistan have 4 weeks to respond to Iran’s offer.

India will have to pay more for its share of gas at the border with Pakistan since $4.93 per mmbtu will be the delivered price of gas at the Iran-Pakistan border. The final price for India would depend upon the transportation and transit fee through Pakistan, sources said.

A government official, who was present during the two-day joint working group meeting in Tehran beginning January 24, told FE the Iranian petroleum minister had categorically said if India did not agree to the prices, Iran and Pakistan would immediately go ahead for a bilateral arrangement.

“When the Indian delegation reached Tehran, it got to know that the hosts had already set a meeting with a Pakistani delegation on January 24. We also sought a courtesy call, which was then acceded to. Although the meeting was to be a joint one, the Pakistan side was called in first and their discussion lasted for an hour,” said another official.

Pak, Iran to implement gasline project soon

TEHRAN (Agencies) - President General Pervez Musharraf on Monday proposed a plan of action to bring about unity in the ranks of Ummah and to address major decisive issues in the region particularly Palestine, Lebanon and Iraq.
The President in his talks with the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad at the Presidential Complex said that unity among the ranks of Muslim Ummah would also defuse confrontation between Iran and the United States.
The two leaders held formal talks, which lasted about seventy-five minutes. These were followed by a one- on-one meeting. The Iranian President welcomed plan and assured the President of all possible assistance on the part of Iran to make it a success.
The Iranian President expressed the willingness to initiate implementation of the project immediately. Since the two countries have worked out the pricing mechanism Iran and Pakistan will discuss an early implementation of the pipeline project.
The President also met Iranian supreme leader Ayatullah Ali Khemnai. ISNA news agency reported that Khamenei told Musharraf: “Israel has been the main reason for divisions among Islamic nations.
“Any plan about the situation in the Middle East will be successful when it stops the bullying of the US in the region and puts an end to the Zionist crimes.”
“This dangerous plan is under operation in Iraq and some other countries, and the Islamic countries and nations must make this plot fail by alertness and unity,” Khamenei said of divisions between Shias and Sunnis.
Meanwhile, Iranian Oil Minister Kazem Vaziri Hamaneh said on Monday that Iran and Pakistan had reached agreement on the final sale price of the gas to be transferred through Peace Pipeline. Speaking to reporters in Jam he said the Indian Deputy Oil Minister had agreed with the suggested formula but sought one month to take decision.
Vaziri Hamaneh said that Pakistan and India are expected to discuss the issue in the coming two weeks. Meanwhile, Iran has warned that it will strike a bilateral deal with Pakistan for gas supply if India does not agree to the price sought during discussions among the three countries in January, Indian Express quoted sources as saying.
“When the Indian delegation reached Tehran, it got to know that the hosts had already set a meeting with a Pakistani delegation on January 24. ‘Accord on IPI project by June’

NEW DELHI, Feb 7: India believes that an agreement on a multi-billion dollar gas pipeline from oil and gas rich Iran to energy-starved India through Pakistan could be signed by June, an official said on Wednesday.

“The minister has said that the agreement on the Iran-Pakistan-India pipeline is likely to be signed by June this year,” an Indian oil ministry spokesman told AFP.

A report in the Asian Age newspaper on Wednesday quoted Minister Murli Deora as saying that the new price offered by Tehran during talks last month “looks all right for us.” “Subject to the satisfactory conclusion of the sale-purchase agreement, we may sign a deal with Iran by June,” the minister was quoted as saying.

US opposes Iranian gas pipeline to India

New Delhi: The United States has told the Indian Government that it is opposed to plans to build a natural gas pipeline from Iran to India through Pakistan, U.S. Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman said Wednesday.

"During my trip, I have made it clear at the highest levels of the Indian government that the United States opposes the development of the Iranian pipeline to India,'' Bodman said in an interview with a foreign media.

If constructed, the 2,600-kilometer (1,620-mile) on-land pipeline is expected to carry 150 million cubic meters (5.2 billion cubic feet) of gas a day and will cost about US$8 billion (euro6.25 billion) to build.

The project has been delayed because of the U.S. opposition to Iran's nuclear program. Washington also regards Iran as one of the world's principal state sponsors of terrorism.

``We believe that Iran is seeking to develop nuclear weapons, and anything that will support that endeavor is something that we oppose,'' Bodman said.

Indian officials say they do not want Iran to develop nuclear weapons, but at the same time stress that more time is needed for diplomatic efforts to resolve the Iran nuclear crisis.

India and Iran are in the process of discussing the price of gas that would be pumped through the pipeline.

With its economy growing at around 9 percent annually, India needs natural gas to meet its burgeoning energy needs.

Since I am in the oil industry I can quote some figures. These are ESTIMATES based on 2005/2006 data. Most of the links such as Oil & Gas Journal would only provide data if you pay.

India: Total proven oil reserves - 5.6 billion barrels. Total proven gas reserves -860 billion cubic meters

Pakistan: Total proven oil reserves- 400 million barrels. Total proven gas reserves - 760 billion cubic meters.

Iran: Total proven oil reserves - 130 billion barrels. Total proven gas reserves-26.6 trillion cubic meters

Saudi Arabia: Total proven oil reserves - 262 billion barrels. Total proven gas reserves 6.6 trillion cubic meters.

I have given Iran and Saudi Arabian figures to put what India and Pakistan have in proper perspective.

Indian demand is 2.5 million barrels per day of oil and 32-billion cubic meters per year of gas. Pakistan demnad is 350,000 bbls per day of oil and 28-billion cubic meters per year of gas.

One can see that with a 4-5% annual growth in demand( about 50% of the GDP growth), the subcontinent gas reverves are insufficient to meet the growing energy requirement. Iran gas pipeline is vital but against strong US pressure, will it actually be built??

Let us keep our fingers crossed.

Sir,

Latest Indian surveys have cliamed that there are huge unproven gas reserves est. between 20-40 trillion m3 in Bay of Bengal. India might have surplus in near ten years time.

I've posted it somewhere in Indian economics thread.

Pakistan, India to speed up IPI project

* Pakistani, Indian PMs discuss progress on composite dialogue, Kashmir and prisoners

By Irfan Ghauri

NEW DELHI: Pakistan and India on Wednesday decided that they would pursue the Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) gas pipeline project “as fast as they can”.

The two countries discussed several bilateral issues including Kashmir, Siachen, Sir Creek and progress on the ongoing composite dialogue when Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz met Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the latter’s residence here. The bilateral meeting continued for 50 minutes during which Aziz and Singh had a 20-minute one-on-one meeting.

Aziz later told reporters that the two sides had discussed the IPI project in detail and had agreed on making speedy progress for its completion.

The Pakistani premier said that he had taken up the issue of more than 500 Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails while Singh had asked for the release of Indian fishing boats that had been seized for entering Pakistani waters. Aziz said that Pakistan had already freed the Indian fishermen and he would give directions for releasing the boats.

“Secretary-level talks on Siachen and Sir Creek are scheduled this week and we hope for progress on these issues,” said Aziz, adding that he had also discussed the Samjhota Express incident with Singh and had told him about Pakistan’s interest in the Indian investigations. He said that Singh had assured him that India would give “periodic” information to Pakistan. He added that Pakistan and India would jointly pay compensation to the families of the Samjhota incident victims. A press statement issued later said the two countries had agreed on granting permission to their respective banks to open branches and increasing air links. Separately, Bangladesh Chief Executive Fakhurdeen Ahmed also met Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and Aziz told him that Pakistan would give wheat worth $10 million as a gift to Bangladesh.

Agencies add: Meanwhile, in a meeting with Indian Natural Gas Minister Murli Deora, Aziz said the IPI gas pipeline would help Pakistan and India meet their energy requirements. Online reported that India asked Pakistan to waive the $200 million a year transit fee it is expecting for allowing the pipeline’s passage.

Pakistan, India pushing on IPI despite US opposition: Aziz

NEW DELHI: India and Pakistan are pushing ahead with a pipeline that would ship gas from Iran to the South Asian rivals, despite American opposition to the plan, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said Thursday.

India and Pakistan face potentially severe energy shortages, and “as our economies are growing very rapidly, we need additional hydrocarbons and energy resources,” Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz told the private NDTV news channel. “Iran is one country which can supply this to us,” he said in the interview after he met his Indian counterpart, Manmohan Singh, following a regional summit in New Delhi.

Asked about United States of America resistance to the plan, he said: “Our public opinion, our governments, our people want us to pursue our national interests and we will pursue that.” ap

Report: Pakistan revives IPI with new plan

NEW DELHI, April 6 (UPI) -- Pakistan, in a bid to allay Indian concerns over transit routes, has offered to sell India Iranian oil at its border, boosting the tri-nation pipeline.

The semi-official Press Trust of India reported Friday that Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, in a meeting with Indian Petroleum Minister Murli Deora Tuesday, offered to buy 60 million standard cubic meters per day of gas from Iran and sell half of it to India at their common border. The news agency quoted "highly placed sources."

The $7 billion, 643-mile pipeline has been stalled because of a pricing dispute and Indian concern over high transit fees and the price of Iranian gas. Under the reported Pakistani suggestion, India would not have to deal with Iran or worry about security for the pipeline, PTI reported.

"On the flip side, Pakistan may add some margin to the already high Iranian gas price," PTI said.

Under initial plans, India would have paid close to $7 per million British thermal units when transit fees were taken into account.

The United States opposes the deal because it says it will embolden Iran, which is facing international scrutiny for its nuclear program.

Pakistan offers to sell Iran gas to India

NEW DELHI, April 6 (UPI) -- Pakistan has reportedly offered to sell Iranian gas to India to ease its neighbor's concerns about pipeline security and other issues involving Iran.
The Pakistan plan, which adds a new phase to the controversial three-nation gas pipeline project, was offered by Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz in New Delhi for a South Asian regional summit, the Press Trust of India reported Friday.

The plan calls for selling the Iranian gas at the India-Pakistan border, thereby removing India's concerns about safe transit of the gas through Pakistani territory, or having to deal with Iran, which faces U.N. sanctions for its nuclear program, the report said.

Under the plan proposed to India's petroleum minister, Pakistan would buy 2.1 billion cubic feet per day of gas from Iran, use half of it for its use and then sell the other half at the India-Pakistan border.

Aziz also offered to negotiate an acceptable price with Iran and take care of transporting the gas to the border. India's response to the proposal was not immediately divulged.
