Import duty on eatable, luxury items raised by up to 50pc

Potatoes are grown domestically (Imported in case of shortage) as well as fruits. Fruits in any way are not part of routine diet for majority of families.
Ok let me break this down for you
Potatoes are a part of many affordable dishes, both made at home and outside. Also they are consumed more in times like Ramadan as are fruits. And the fruits are eaten by all those who can afford them, and are actually mostly eaten by the young, sick or old population so yea, nice targeting.

Yes. But considering the every day diet plan of majority of Pakistani families this step shall not have significant affect.
are you kidding me... what facts and figures are you using for that other then idiocy
The reduction of spending will halt the economy, will reduce the quality of goods, and there has been no replacement in the local industry. Maybe you could defend the sports section but the rest....

"Wheat exports in the 2016/17 marketing year (May/April) are estimated to have increased by 13 percent from the previous year’s low level to 850 000 tonnes, in line with the 2016 overall good output and large carryover stocks."
Well...
https://tribune.com.pk/story/1353705/story-pakistans-elite-wheat/
Read this :
The support price of wheat is a staggering Rs1, 300 per mound, which is equivalent to almost $310 per metric ton whereas international price of wheat is $137 per metric ton.

The Government can not manage to manage prices in the country as they are idiots.

and after you read the article, admit you have no idea what you are talking about, you are defending something wrong, and fix your thinking. Or just change the way you think to put Pakistan first, not a party.

.
instead of regulating quality controls laws for the local industry they are increasing the cost of the imported items to force people buy third class products.

until now i was extremely against the smuggled products never used one.but if they keep increasing the price without providing us with the quality build local alternatives i won't judge anyone who uses it.

Everyone is idot except you and you are a think tank analyst on the forum. This shows why the quality of the forum is sinking.

Broadly statting duties are imposed on:

1. Imported Eatables
2. Cosmetics
3. Ceramics
4. Electronics
5. Sports products
6. Imported Vehicles

Point 2 to 6 hardly affects common person as they already can not afford them.

Point 1 shall have more affect on those who can afford it and not on common person as he perhaps already does not use many of the items listed on the imported food items.

Increase in duty on import of wheat, sugar cane, potatoes and vegetables can in a way have positive affect as local growers might benefit from it. This if handled properly may increase local production.

If we buy your logic , you need to feel shame after 4 years 95% Pakistanis can not afford any of above ....... And you almost shamelessly calling them common Pakistanis .

Now let me tell you this ,
Point 1: Will effect 95% of Pakistan of all classes , it will not effect 5% elite.
2: Will effect 70% of Pakistanis leaving 25% extremely poor , ironically it wont effect 5% elite because majority of them go abroad for shopping.
Number 3 and 4 : will effect 40% Pakistanis (again common) who build houses after very long struggle or those who buy stuff for jahaiz and etc........... As usual only 5% elite will not get effected.
Number 5 and 6 : Are only 2 which effects only 10% in Pakistan. So only logical is 5 and 6.

One more thing , We do not have enough domestic agriculture or industrial output to meet our demands so we have to import, no matter what.
So my question from you is........
What PML-N's GOVT. did and will do for increase of local (domestic) output of above items? How many industrial Units have been installed ? and What steeps have been taken in Agriculture sector?
Let me remind you here , Right now Potatoes are 25 to 75 Rupees per KG , now they will cross 100 ....

Yes the number of people supporting you is apparant
Now let me break it down for you in simple terms. When you increase the price of certain goods, without giving substitutes which are of equal quality you reduce the consumption which slows down the economy. All fast food places, which hire the middle class, will have to increase their prices which will lead to decreased sales. Wonder what they use, but then again cheese and potatoes
Oh yes, local cosmetics are non existent, so all those go to parlours or cosmetic shops will have costs increase and guess who works there, the common man.
I could do this for every category except sports good and vehicles which makes sense because the consumers will not mind a price change as much as other sectors will.
and when things increase in price but the salaries do not keep up, guess what happens. People spend less and the economy slows down. This leads to the common man losing jobs. But it is okay according to you this has no effect on the common man and economy is a very simple idea of increase indirect taxes while ignoring the direct tax filers. If we had a real government all those who are non tax filers who buy cars would be held accountable, all those with houses without income tax filing would be held accountable.
I am sick of justification of stupid policies try and use your brain without having everything spoon fed to you.

What we needed I listed in a post earlier, which should have been pursued in the last few years, but instead of that the simple loans idea was preferred and now the common man pays the price.

As far as this comment goes you still did not explain why the wheat is so expensive in Pakistan and what the government has done to reduce prices of local wheat. 2.5 times more expensive and we are an agricultural economy with cheap labour and local fertilisers. The forum's standard fell when idiots with political parties in front of logic came and tried to justify things which are wrong for their personal interests. So either you are an idiot who does not think himself, or an idiot who places party before nation or someone who has sold himself as a mouth piece.
Otherwise excessive taxation with no actual significant increase in tax filers who give direct taxes as to reduce the burden of indirect taxes on the nation as a whole is a stupid policy of a government which does not know how to govern. That is the basic role of the government.
@DESERT FIGHTER I must be civil according to the title requirements, maybe you can explain it in simpler terms.

they are party followers, Pakistan or humanity is lost to them...

He can not answer logically then he gets personal or tries to deflect. leave him to answer what I have said, let us not make this thread a debate with a single idiot.

I saw the title and I was like .. Oh shit f**** again. Happy it was not for us . bad to see the neighbours in this shit though.
there should be a secluded island for those who do not want to pay their direct taxes, and they can have everything with indirect taxes. Maybe a man made island which will sink in a few years.

I am not PML(N) supporter and do not support PTI either. Both are idiots of their own class.

Wheat price in Pakistan is higher because government has consistently increased wheat support price provided to farmers over the last ten years. This has resulted in wheat price increasing from roughly Rs. 400/40 kg ten years a go to roughly Rs. 1300/40 kg today. Not a good step but was taken by all govenrments and surprisingly opposition of the time also did not oppose it.

Farmers given relief? In which world do you live sir?

Do you even own agri lands? I doubt it.

.
Tax on import items IF the intention is to promote local industry, is a good step.

In Pakistan.

Farmers given relief? In which world do you live sir?

Do you even own agri lands? I doubt it.

Taken from budget 2017 press brief:

AGRICULTURE
- Continuation of subsidized electricity for agri-tube wells
- Single-digit (9.9%) mark-up rate for farmers utilizing loans up-to Rs.50,000
- Continuation of subsidy on electricity to low-income and low-usage customers
- Credit to agriculture sector – increased from Rs.700 billion target of the current year to Rs.1,001 billion

then it would be better to import the wheat and grow tea, olives, rice, or any other cash crop. You can not have an agricultural economy with the agricultural product being too expensive to export, to expensive for local consumers, and still promote it.

Farmers given relief? In which world do you live sir?
They do if they have political backing which is mostly in Punjab and Sindh with the land lords. The middle class farmer gets screwed
