Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi announced on Saturday that a new space center, named after Imam Khomeini, will be used for launching domestically made satellites into space.

The new space center, which is 80 percent complete, will be used for sending satellites made by Iran and other Muslim countries into space, Vahidi said.

Iranian commemorated the death anniversary of Imam Khomeini, the Founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, on Sunday.

“The children of great Khomeini, the innovative and leading scientists and experts at the Aerospace Industry Organization of the Defense Ministry, will send into orbit the new generation of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s satellites from this center,” Vahidi stated.

As the first step, Vahidi said, the Tolou satellite will be launched into orbit from the Imam Khomeini space center.

TEHRAN (FNA)- A new satellite launch center whose construction will finish in the near future has been named after the Late Founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi announced on Saturday.

Vahidi said that 80% of the construction of Imam Khomeini Space Center has been completed.

Vahidi added that the base will send a new generation of home-made satellites as well as the satellites made by the regional and Muslim countries into orbit in the near future.

"In a first move" Vahidi stated "the Imam Khomeini Space Center will send Tolou (Dawn) satellite into orbit on the back of Simorgh satellite carrier."

Senior Iranian space officials had earlier announced construction of a national center for satellite launch.

The Islamic republic, which first put a satellite into orbit in 2009, has outlined an ambitious space program and has, thus far, made giant progress in the field despite western sanctions and pressures against its advancements.

Iran says it will launch the Tolo satellite from a newly constructed space center carrying the name of the late Imam Khomeini.

Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi said that the new space center constructed by the Islamic Republic of Iran bears the name of the late Imam Khomeini, adding the Tolou (Sunrise) satellite will be placed into orbit from the Imam Khomeini Space Center, IRNA reported on Saturday.

He said the space center was named after the Founding Father of the Islamic Republic to honor the late Imam and his efforts for Iran's glory, pride and independence.

The minister said that 80 percent of the space center's construction is over, adding that the center has the capacity to serve as the launching pad for satellites produced in Iran, regional countries and Muslim nations.

The Iranian scientists and experts at the Defense Ministry will launch the new generation of Iran-made satellites into space from this very center, he said.

As a first step, the minister said, the Tolou Satellite will be launched by Simorgh orbital carrier rocket from the Imam Khomeini Space Center.

Vahidi went on to emphasize that the Defense Ministry and other organizations in the country owe their big achievements to the late Imam Khomeini, a great man through whom the world knows the Islamic Revolution of Iran.
