"Illegal" Turkish Drilling: France will send a frigate to Cyprus waters

France confirmed on Saturday the holding of exercises by a frigate in the Cypriot waters, following the sending by Turkey of a drill ship in this sector, rich in gas fields.

The day before, the Greek Minister of Defense Nikos Panagiotopoulos had claimed on the channel Skai TV to have asked the French "if they would fight back (to the Turkish provocation) by any military presence in the area and they replied that they sent a frigate.

A spokesman for the French General Staff confirmed to AFP that the frigate Auvergne had stopped in the port of Larnaca on October 10 and that the frigate Lafayette was to "perform exercises with the Cypriot navy on Sunday October 13 ".

Earlier Saturday, French Armed Forces Minister Florence Parly said in a tweet that "French-Cypriot naval exercises are currently taking place in Cypriot waters".
