Air Marshal (retd.) Idris Hasan Latif played pivatol role in convincing Indira Gandhi government for acquisition of MIG-25s. Air Chief Marshal Latif was commissioned into the Royal Indian Air Force in 1942. During partition in 1947 this brave muslim air warrior refused to join Pakistan Air Force & opted for IAF.
He served as chief of air staff of the Indian Air Force from from 1978 to 1981. After retirement, he has also served as the governor of the Indian state of Maharashtra (1982–85) and later as the Indian ambassador to France (till 1988).
