IAF to have 45 combat squadrons by 2027.

ALLAHABAD: The induction of 126 Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) will enhance the capability of the Indian Air Force which will be procuring the 5th generation fighters by 2017 and by 2027. The country will then have 42 to 45 squadrons as compared to present 34 squadrons, said Chief of Air Staff, Indian Air force, Air Chief Marshal Pradeep Vasant Naik. He was speaking to the media here on Tuesday.

The Air Chief Marshal said the IAF would be continuing with its non-offensive role in the Naxal operations. On the question of the proposed post of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Naik said he was not opposed to the post of CDS, but its pros and cons should be looked into and we should see why it is needed and what kind of model will it be based on.

On the issue of proposal of IAF taking control of Hindustan Aeronautical Limited, the Chief Marshal said the IAF will not take over the setup but has proposed deputing an officer of the rank of Air Marshal to supervise the operations and enhance the efficiency of HAL.

About conferring the rank of honorary Group Captain on cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, Naik said the Little Master is an icon for the youth.

"The regional and global geopolitical dynamics are changing rapidly and this calls for greater vigil and preparation by the defence forces to neutralise a variety of security challenges," Naik said. The IAF is alive to the changing threat scenario and is fast emerging as a strategic aerospace force, capable of addressing our security concerns, he added. "Our response mechanisms are being upgraded constantly, through the induction of cutting-edge technologies and training of our personnel. I would like to assure the nation that the Indian Air Force is ever-ready to meet any challenge that may come our way," the Air Chief said.

Praising the role of the Central Air Command (CAC), Naik said, "CAC is an important bastion of the IAF and is in a state of continuous action. The command is home to some of our most vital strategic assets and has a force-blend capable of achieving any given objectives. The induction of AWACS, AAR and some of the latest aircraft and responsibility has significantly enhanced our capabilities." He also complimented all personnel working at various units under CAC for the excellent work they are doing in service of the nation.

IAF to get 5th generation fighter planes - The Times of India

IAF already applied to MOD for increasing its minimum strength to 45 squadron from present 39.5 squadrons. I think the we can do this much before 2027, if HAL sticks to the plan and production rate is a bit high....This can be possible is some of the future projects are handed over to other companies like Rustom UAV, basic trainer, LCA mk1 and mk2 etc. We will do it better if we issue a domestic tender for a indian partner for this project. MAhindra, Tata, BEML, Godrej etc are getting ready and they have gained some experience. If these deals are handed over to them they can finally enter into aerospace sector otherwise they will stick to producing doors and windows of aircraft we will never be able to produce an aircraft....

Present strength is 34 not 39.5.;)

I meant sanctioned strength. Presently the sanctioned strength for IAF is 39.5 but IAF is under-equipped. It is by 2020 that IAF will be able to reach that mark and by 2027 they are saying we will reach 45 but IAF has already asked MOD for permission to raise sanctioned squadron although it will take time to induct so many fighter jets...
My personnel opinion is everyone is too sloppy at MOD. We should have never reached to this condition. By 2020, IAF should have reached the strength of 45 squadron but its not possible....

current strength is 34 no doubt but the sanctioned strength is 39.5 at present by 2025 it is set for 45 so (Fox) u misunderstood his statement and angeldemon_007 was correct indeed

47 squadrons by 2027? Damn! I'd probably be dead and gone long before that!

But seriously, we should consider having at least 20 squadrons of these equipped with UCAVs. The future of warfare is remote control. An example is the American UCAV X-45...

The future of military aircraft might keep pilots out of harm's way altogether. Unmanned Combat Air Vehicles have been in the testing phases by the U.S. Military for years, and wide-scale use in wartime is likely not far off. Besides lives, researchers hope to eventually save production costs with these compact fliers, which have no need for a cockpit, canopy or control panels.

We're unfortunately equipping the Armed Forces of the future with today's thinking and technology! By 2030 the in thing would be cloaking technology and anti gravity hyper speed craft like the secret TAW-50 and the Nautilus. The US of A have already got these top secret 'black projects' going in Lockheed martin's Skunk Works and Boeing's Phantom Works. As a US medic privy to what's going on in these organizations says, "the technology is akin to the sci fi thriller, Star Trek"!!

In other words, technology is far far ahead than what we are made to believe.

That will come under UAVs. I don't think UAV squadron is included in this...

40-45 sqdn was/is the IAF budget which gives it a 2:1 ratio over the PAF which remains the IAF's princpal adversary. this ratio was available in 65 and 71 and it seems that the IAF feels comfortable with this superiority in numbers.

forget china!!!

But remember that China has a lot of space to defend against a host of countries - The US of A, Russia, India, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, and the South China Sea! India has just Pakistan and China to contend with. So it's only fair that China has many more squadrons than India. :coffee:
