Its neither good nor bad.

The manufacturer ( read Producer / Director) make their product to generate max revenue, the tools to achieve them vary.

Its simply entertainment..just time pass and an industry that provides employment to so many peripherals.

Its for the viewer of their products ( films) to draw the good / bad from it as is done with any other product in the market.

Bollywood is made into a big social thing in nations outside India as I note from the drift of you mail.

I my opinion , TV serials are worse.

Bollywood is a full time pass entertainment with no social or ethical issues. Its a business.

We dont care whether it is good or bad, we care whether movie is good or bad for entertainment.

Very good movie: Watch in theatre
Good movie: Watch in pirated CD
Average movie: Watch on Television
Bad Movie: Avoid the headache.

Though certain movies like Taare Zameen par have given a different angle to society to think.

Thats what majority Indians think of bollywood.

And one more thing its good gossip generator after Cricket and politics.

Its the media, media offers what the people wants, and I think Bollywood keeps that in mind, the South-Asian market.

Bollywood is good because it offers cheap entertainment and keeps the young occupied who might otherwise be involved in more destructive ways to spend their time. Bollywood is also a powerful media machine which can be used to mold people's opinion(which has been pretty positive). All in all, it helps hold India together and keep its sanity.

I think it is full of vulgairty----profanity---. Basically most of the movies should be R rated for their sexual content and sensual and sexual nudity---suggestive posturing and expressions.

Bollywood is selling SEX and female SKIN----now there are exceptions as well---but far and few---.

For that reason---on a personal note----I have not seen any bollywood movie since 1983---.

Please---don't get me wrong--I ain't no saint---but as a poster wrote in the link on STUPID &

FUNNY and told the difference between 'kinky and pervert'----I think majority of bollywood

For starters it projects India's soft power abroad in a cultural sense not too different from what Hollywood is to the West. But it is an industry which strives to make money - like all industries do. Brilliant movies are never blockbusters - that is true anywhere in the world. A Shankshank Redemption will not garner as much money as a Mission Impossible - but we know which is the better flick. So also brilliant Indian movies like Gandhi, My Father will not make as much money as some crap Salman Khan flick but that is just how it is.

The contribution of Bollywood to society is minimal. It has turned into a glamour business in the recent years except for productions from some really good movie makers like Aamir Khan, Gowariker etc. These are some of the movie makers who experiment with different themes.
Local Film Industries are the ones that really contributes to the Society. Especially Tamil, Malayalam, Marathi movies etc. If you want to watch Indian movies with substance, watch movies from good bollywood movie makers or watch movies produced by local film producers. I appreciate Malayalam movies for their simplicity and substance.

I am a strong believer of sexual freedom. The boundaries that we draw subconciously are pretty much flawed.
For eg, I have observed that wearing a saree exposes a woman's tummy. And that I believe that sends out a much more stronger signal regarding the expression of one's sexuality, if you get what I mean. Yet some people still believe that wearing jeans with tops or short skirts is outrageous. It is hard to explain. But what I mean is, showing skin is no more outrageous from my point of view than making love with your wife.

anyway bollywood dishes out what publick demands & we also these days get a fair share if off beat movies & they are financial sucsesses too...but you very well know the life is not very easy in this part of the world infact very challenging evrybody is stressed out to make his/ her ends meet....in bollywood producers come with a masaala with all the flovours just so that the guy forgets his real world & feels happy for 3 hours then wahee puranee life ...in short bollywood is aal about entertainment & not all coustmers are intellectuels or critics...fun & entertainment(some times cheap & vulgour) is the key thats why its a hit all across the globe....

Yeahhhhhaa...........that's right... and hollywood is all about realities..........superman, batman, spiderman, avatar, James Bond, Rambo..........all portray reality.........James Bond taking on the entire Soviet Union......what a reality !!!!

If you want to see reality then just look around ..........you don't go to movies to seek reality.....movies are entertainment, fantasy, aspirational, time pass.

bollywood like any other entertainment industry is for entertainment. audience want good entertainment & not portray of themselves, society or their country. theaters are meant for fun & not for social-economic lectures.
