The first prototype of a hypersonic cruise missile being jointly developed by Russia and India will be ready for flight testing in 2017, CEO of the Russian-Indian joint venture Brahmos Aerospace, Sivathanu Pillai, said on Wednesday.
Russia and India have recently agreed to develop hypersonic BrahMos 2 missile capable of flying at speeds of Mach 5-Mach 7.
“I think we will need about five years to develop the first fully-functional prototype [of the hypersonic missile],” Pillai said at an engineering technology forum near Moscow.
“We have already carried out a series of lab tests [of the missile] at the speed of 6.5 Mach,” he said.
Pillai said that the new missile will be made in three variants – ground-launched, airborne, and sea-launched.
The official said the new missiles will be supplied only to India and Russia, without exports to third countries.

Established in 1998, BrahMos Aerospace Ltd, a Russian-Indian joint venture currently manufactures BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles based on the Russian-designed NPO Mashinostroyenie 3M55 Yakhont (SS-N-26).
The BrahMos missile has a range of 290 km (180 miles) and can carry a conventional warhead of up to 300 kg (660 lbs). It can effectively engage targets from an altitude as low as 10 meters (30 feet) and has a top speed of Mach 2.8, which is about three times faster than the U.S.-made subsonic Tomahawk cruise missile.
Sea- and ground-launched versions have been successfully tested and put into service with the Indian Army and Navy.
The flight tests of the airborne version will be completed by the end of 2012.
The Indian Air Force is planning to arm 40 Su-30MKI Flanker-H fighters with BrahMos missiles.

Since theday i came to pdf, I must have read tonnes of thread about Brahmos -2 and all of them stated it to be done by 2016.. why suddenly 2017 ? wtf ? Is it like LCA reloaded waiting to happen ? :D

why so late :hitwall: already few prototype models were built . These guys are wasting lot of time . Might be they are busy in making Brahmos III .:undecided:

It is important to understand that all defence policies that are framed are framed with delays kept in mind globally. However, in our country, it is formulated keeping ONLY delays in mind so that there is no work pressure on government employees in administrative or managerial level.

2017 is still way off. We don't know what will happen by 2016. Also, will this missile be designed in Russia or only in India? Will it still have the 290 km limitation?

Incidentally i got to know that PJ10 can hit targets around 600-700km range . Although the official figure is 290km with 300kg warhead(nuclear capable) . The range will still be some where around 600km but payload might be reduced to 200kg .

Why compare Brahmos which has no stealth capabilities with Tomahawk, that does?

Where did you read that tomahawk has stealth capabilities? It doesn't.

And brahmos does have stealth capabilities, by the way:

So it is the other way round.

No mate, Tomahawk has terrain hugging capabilities, no missile system can take it down.

lol dont insult Brahmos , Its far better than tomhawk and its copies .

Hey I wasnt insulting just asking

Shiv the situation is not as simple as you think. Delays are inherent part of development, sometime due to technical reason, sometime due to bad management planning. LCA was result of both.

I will give some illustration:
1. Our Engineers were working on FCS (FLight cntrl sys) in USA, one day America throw us out of country. They seized our codes, We started from scratch in Bangalore, Now our FCS is world class.
2. Engine: EPic LCA Troll like Sancho claim that we should have gone with some other engine rather than banking on Kaveri, I agree and Disagree with you. In 90s India was not that powerful, and don't forget that no one gave us Engine for Marut. Once world saw that We can make Engines, they open there shops for us.
3. IAF act devil, They changed the requirement 100 times, Which lead to disaster. If you are working in Multinational environment, You must know that mid-life requirement change cost both time and money..

Why this will not happen to BrahmosII: Brahmos is made by a company, which make it and then IA, IAF and NAVY will buy it. So there is no direct involvement of Bastard Agents here.

Brahmos II will be technological Marvel, Very few country on earth will have hypersonic cruise missile. If I am not wrong, No country has this yet.
