You have basically three Indias, stratified by money, and money only.

1/2 total population: extremely poor. That’s 500 million ppl. They squeak by somehow. Of that figure, some percentage (not really sure, I’m guessing maybe 15-20% or 75-100million ppl) are DIRT POOR. They don’t eat everyday. They may spend their entire lives browsing the public dumps for food and anything they can use at home or possibly resale.
That’s a staggering number, and more poverty than China. You may think Democracy and capitalism work better than communism and capitalism, but the experiment has already been done in India and China, and India (democracy) has lost. Capitalism will not do anything to change the poverty of these 500 million people. Why? It is not designed to, that’s why, and that is a pretty basic failure when it comes to a model on which to base an entire society.

About 450 million lower-, middle-, and upper-middle class. Yes they do the IT jobs and the service jobs (Hello, this is Krish, may I help you?) and the engineering jobs. There’s also a class that produces the arts (classical music and dance, and of course, all things Bollywood). They are not as wealthy as the tech and engineering billionaires, but they don’t have to be because those billionaires are their patrons.

Then there’s the superrich. They do what superrich people everywhere do, and are in fact better thought of as members of the global superrich society.

Yes, the caste system still exists, but in the final analysis, it’s the money that determines status.

But my point is, these are three totally different societies, even though they are all comprised of Indian people. I’d be very careful about lumping them together. My musician friends and associates are as far away from the impoverished India as I am sitting here in Seattle. In fact, they are closer to me culturally than they are to India’s poor.

Firstly, its one India only. Why should there be three ? Never heard of a country having different economic strata in a society before ? You came from Bangladesh or some other planet ?

Secondly, please take those illegal Bangladeshis back!! I don't know whether they are breeding like guinea pigs or more of them are coming everyday, but they are spreading like viruses!! If you want to help, do something about it..

Listen moron - better you keep your fucking indophobic shit with all those fucked up copy pasted fantasy figures in your threads only - and as a matter of fact - India has 23.6% people living in poverty compared to 43.3% in Bangladesh as per the World Bank - better you take care of your country before commenting on others.

Delhi Metro will be upgraded to ATO standard
Soon, Delhi Metro to have trains that run without drivers
delhimetro.jpg

The sight of driverless Delhi Metro trains whizzing past stations, crowded and deserted, is all set to become a reality as upgraded new-generation coaches are being introduced on two upcoming lines as part of its Phase-III of expansion.

Apart from "unattended" trains, the 58-km-long Mukundpur- Shiv Vihar corridor and the 34-km-long Janakpuri (West)- Botanical Garden corridors will also have a new-age signalling system. "The frequency of trains would increase to a much greater level and the gaps between two trains would come down to around 90 seconds due to this Communication-Based Train Control (CTBC) technology," a Metro spokesman said.

An official explained that these trains would be able to accommodate as many as 240 commuters more in six coaches as the cab of the trains is not required in driverless trains. A total of 68 stations on the upcoming lines would also have Platform Screen Doors for greater safety and to prevent suicide attempts.

"More than 60 per cent work is complete on those lines" an official added. Asked whether the technology would be implemented on the other upcoming lines of Phase-III, the official said that would not be possible as they are merely extensions of existing lines.

"The technology is being implemented on Line 7 and 8 as the entire lengths of the corridors are being constructed," the official said. The trains would also be "10 per cent" more energy efficient than the operational ones because of improved design features, including more regeneration of energy during braking and energy efficient subsystems such as LED lighting.

Have travelled on both Delhi and Mumbai Metro and i agree, Reliance took Mumbaikars for a ride. The rake and ride quality is markedly poor, here in Mumbai.

Which proves one thing: The Lowest bidder isn't always the logical option.

I wonder if I'll get to work on a Metro Project.......

9 Cities - 6 of them are fully operational - 3 of them will start operations this year as their trail runs have been successfully completed - By the end of 2020 we will have 15 more cities with Metro rail, so total 24 cities/districts with metro systems by 2020 apart from 8 other metro systems are being planned.

Thanks to firms like Larsen & Toubro - they complete the work in the specified timeline (at least the infrastructure part of it - rolling stock and metro bogeys are to be supplied by the subcontractor) - Here in Lucknow we are pretty impressed with the pace of construction work of the metro rail - L&T will complete it well within the time frame.

Mumbai metro has used Chinese rakes (all imported) because the Anil Ambani Group - which is the developer - is in hock to the Chinese banks for its other companies. In every other case - Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kochi etc - the rakes are being built in India either by BEML or by Bombardier (plant in Vadodara) or Alstom (plant located in TN I think).

Mumbai metro showcases the business practices of the Chinese - Chinese banks make cheap loans and these loans are used to fund projects which in turn use shoddy Chinese equipment. In case of power sector also, some power plants bought China made turbine generators - and these plants have a markedly inferior performance vis a vis BHEL or other equipment makers. I don't think any serious power company now orders equipment from China any more. The government should put in place proper procurement rules to ensure that crappy manufacturers don't ride in on cheap loans.
