After successfully unlocking of the first indigenous aircraft carrier “INS Vikrant” in June this year. Indian Navy has finally started on the rigorous process to identify shipyards which can be shortlisted for construction of proposed Second indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC-2).

Naval Sources close to idrw.org have confirmed that Navy has sought expression of Intent from Several Shipyards both from the Public sector and Private sectors for construction of proposed Second indigenous aircraft carrier IAC-2 aka INS Vishal.

Navy has sent requests to few establishment like Mazagon Dock Limited, Hindustan Shipyard Limited, GRSE, Cochin Shipyard Limited and private sector yards Pipavav, Larsen & Toubro, ABG and Bharti to send theirs expression of Intent for construction of proposed Second indigenous aircraft carrier IAC-2 .

Defence Analyst close to idrw.org believes Indian Navy will have to take a call soon if Navy plans to build a Nuclear or conventional Aircraft carrier, since Navy still not has made up its mind on selection of propulsion for the new aircraft carrier.

If Navy does plan to go Nuclear on IAC-2 it will mean considerable investment in capability building in selected shipyard and training of manpower which all needs to be a factored in before government committee is set up to shortlist shipyards .

US and India are Currently working together in the design of the IAC-2 for which United states has also offered its latest EMALS aircraft launch system developed by General atomics which also has been installed on Us Navies latest aircraft carrier USS Gerald R Ford .

Proposed INS Vishal (65000 tonnes) which is a follow on of IAC-1 aka INS Vikrant (40000 tonnes ) is currently under construction at the Cochin Shipyards and is scheduled for commissioning in 2018-19.

IN should decide FAST before the cost of Construction goes up further. They need to plan for two such AC and give order for them together so that the total cost can come down and it will be cheaper to make them.

Learn from the UK.

That way we will have Two 45K Ton AC and Two 65-70 Ton AC
