Afghan security officials say they have foiled a huge attack in the capital Kabul, as they gave details of the seizure of 10 tonnes of explosives.

The explosives were found in a truck seized along with five militants in an operation last Sunday, a National Directorate of Security spokesman said.

The group was planning to kill the second vice-president, Mohammad Khalili and attack crowded areas, he said.

The arrests happened during a wave of insurgent attacks around the country.

The discovery was kept quiet because of the sensitive nature of the operation, NDS spokesman Shafiqullah Tahiri said.

The explosives, stuffed in 400 bags and hidden under piles of potatoes, were to have been used in a massive attack targeting crowded areas of the capital, he added.

The spokesman said the five suspects had links with Pakistan's main intelligence organisation, the Inter-Services Intelligence agency, or ISI, and were acting on the orders of two Taliban commanders.

Afghanistan has often accused the ISI of involvement in supporting anti-government insurgents in Afghanistan.

'Large-scale bloodshed'

A video detailing the group's plans was also found, along with suicide vests and weapons, the spokesman said.

"If this amount of explosives had been used, it could have caused large-scale bloodshed," Mr Tahiri said.

Earlier, another spokesman said the men - three Pakistan citizens and two Afghans - were thought to belong to the Pakistan-based Haqqani insurgent network.

The mainly Afghan Pashto group operates out of the northwestern Pakistani tribal areas, and is seen as linked to, but separate, from the Afghan Taliban.

Last week, 51 people died in a wave of co-ordinated attacks by insurgents in Kabul and three other provinces.

By the grace of God our security forces are becoming stronger day by day - this is the second biggest attack by terrorists in which they are failed!

Do you think that Afghan Security Forces can take over security operations by end of 2014?

although its a good job but how they hell can the claim ISI involvement in the matter without any evidence and if they have evidence then they should show it and take action on a political level and based on just following suspicion and claiming Pakistan responsible is just plain wrong, they are following in the foot steps of the US and Indian example by just bashing out and inefficency on their part to Pakistan.......these hypocrites are in luck that real men are not running Pakistan because if they were the **** would have hit the fan a long time ago......

I think it is going to be glorious days ahead for Afghanistan. I just posted a thread here where US was saying it willl spend $4.5 billion dollars every year for the defence forces after it pulls out in 2014. If you sum up the various news - this new plus the prevention of two biggest attacks and the plans by various countries to invest in Afghanistan(e.g. $11 billion investment plans by India), I believe stability will return.

Now, just blow up all those m0r0ns with seized explosives

Afghan is on the expressway to get rid of terrorist and achieving success

Can or cannot are passive things, at-least they are giving a nice try. Insha Allah they will succeed.

I think Afghan forces are just making up these stories to look good in front of the world. No word from the head of Haqqani in this matter.

And all NATO and non-nato combat forces in Afghanistan want out of Afghanistan as soon as possible (except Britain and United States), so if Afghan forces are so strong then why keep foreigners still in your soil?

Yes they can but the thing is their enemy has an endless supply of reinforcements from across the border !

it's 2012 see their capabilities imagine their power after 2014.

In 2010, there were articles on how it was difficult to train the Afghanistan forces and how they were to be handheld by Coalition forces in operations against Taliban. Consider how the situation has changed in 2012. 2014 is 2 more years and I agree the capabilities are only bound to increase.
