Dhaka, May 10 (bdnews24.com) — Local Government Minister Syed Ashraful Islam once again on Thursday criticised the country's top microcredit operator Grameen Bank and its Nobel prize-winning former managing director Muhammad Yunus.

"The country cannot be developed through multilevel marketing companies and NGOs based on illegal money from abroad. Microcredit won't change our fates and it won't be able to change Bangladesh in the next 100 years," he said at a programme at the capital's Bangabandhu International Conference Centre.

Ashraf's remarks came in presence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, five days after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton expressed her concern over the Grameen Bank imbroglio during her 24-hour visit to Dhaka.

Criticising Yunus winning the Nobel prize, he said, "His [Yunus] basic subject was Economics. But he did not get the prize for Economics. He got the Nobel prize in peace though he did not play any role in stopping a war."

"Now, many people in our country know how to 'get a Nobel prize'," the ruling Awami League general secretary added.

Following a 'confrontation' with Sheikh Hasina government and allegation of transferring funds without donor's permission, Yunus had been removed from the bank as its managing director last year. The government also said that he was overage as per the law to continue in the office.

During her visit to Bangladesh on Sunday, Hillary Clinton told a programme in Dhaka, "We do not want to see any action taken that would in any way undermine or interfere in the operations of the Grameen Bank or its unique organisational structure.

"I don't want anything that would in any way undermine what has been a wonderful model."

Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Tuesday also criticised Clinton for her remarks saying the government has not changed its stance about the microfinance organisation.

"Hillary's statement on the Grameen Bank was undue. The Grameen Bank is an organisation established by the government. It is because of the government that Mr Yunus could come this far," Muhith said.

DHAKA, MAY 10: Local Govern-ment, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Syed Ashraful Islam criticized micro-credit pioneer Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus saying that the so-called micro credit facilities would hardly contribute to national development.

“Micro-credit and Multilevel Marketing will not help change our fate. It will not help develop Bangladesh even in 100 years,” the minister said criticizing the micro-credit facilities being provided by different non-governmental organizations.
Without mentioning name of Yunus, who won Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 along with Grameen Bank, the minister took a swipe on the Nobel laureate posing question to his contribution on building peace.

“He (Yunus) had worked on micro-credit, but won the prize in peace instead of economics. From which war did he bring peace”, asked Ashraf while speaking at a programme of a subsidy-money distribution among the farmers of cooperative society for the waiver of interest on agricultural loan at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in Dhaka.

Yunus’ basic subject was economy. But he got the prize on peace without contributing anything to stop any war, the minister said in presence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who spoke at the programme as the chief guest.
Citing an example of Ireland about how Nobel Prize comes, the minister said two women in Ireland had opened an organization called Motherland Peace. They won the Nobel Peace Prize two months after they opened the organization. “And the women were locked in quarrel soon over sharing of the prize money and the matter rolled into court in three months time and there was no peace eventually,” the minister said.
Ashraf also criticized the US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton for arranging “Adda with Bangladeshi Young Leaders” during her recent visit in Dhaka saying that the questions raised at the programme was pre-fixed.
He said that similar programme was arranged during his India visit. “The Indian programme was advertised for a week. But we could not know anything about the programme even a day ahead,” the minister said.
The Indians asked question on Iran and other international issues while Bangladeshi participants raised questions on domestic politics, which were pre-set, said the minister.
“There was an attempt to portray Bangladesh as small, poor and undemocratic country. It was a shame for Bangladeshi people,” said Ashraf adding that the programme could not bring any profit for the common people rather it was beneficial for the organizers.
The minister said Bangladeshi people have to prove their worthiness through demonstrating their talents.

Heck we should start our own Peace prize as well and being the country of Budhha, Mahavir, Ashoka and Gandhi, we are more legitimate than those vikings.

My choice of Indian Peace prize committee - Lalu Yadav, Mamata Didi, Jayalalita, A Raja, Uma Bharti. Beat that!

I'm not criticizing Dr Yunus. He is a decent economist(not at same level with Amartya Sen et al) and excellent entrepreneur. I respect him for that. But I'd not act like a fanboy because he won Nobel peace prize, as that holds no value for me.

I am confused about the point you are trying to make. Nobel Peace Prize or any peace prize is supposed to be according to someones observant, and they thought the grameen bank model was a worthy cause and therefore decided to hand it out to Yunus. You can have your own opinion, but unfortunately you are too shallow and insignificant for anyone to care about what you think. You are allowed to disagree with where you see fit, but if you ask me, if war criminals like Henry Kissenger and Mother Theresa can be given Nobel Peace prize, Yunus deserves something better.
Ashraful needs to stop babbling and look after his drinking habits. This ministers like Muhith and Ashraful needs to know that everytime they open their mouth, our country soverignty is at stake. You can go ahead disagree with Hilary all you want, but can you really disagree with the fact the entire economy is based on exports to US. Is this the sort of relationship you want with the west?

Folks need to understand that the Prize was about bringing oportunity to the destitute of the society. These are poor woman to whom even the loan sharks wouldn't loan money.

How successful they can be is another issue. Most of the small business are started in the U.S with high intererst bearing Credit Card loans where 9 out of 10 fails.

I borrowed tens of thousands of dollars and started my own business. If it wasnt for my high ( 18%) interest credit cards, I would just have to rely on work for my income and finacial security. Most will fail in this endeavor, but the ones riding out the rough waters prevail.
