That is a picture of the Ainu. You probably don't want to call a person of Ainu origin Japanese. There are still some that care about maintaining their identity.
Shinto originated in Japan and existed well before anything came across. Buddhism came from India, not China.
Japanese did learn basic forms of government structure, architecture, paper, and rice from China. Japan got good things from other countries as well, such as bread, which even today is "pan" in Japanese, from the Portuguese. Lots of other handy things came else where as well, such as anatomy and medical knowledge (the dutch), the light bulb (US), railroad, etc.
Japan stopped importing new useful things from China because useful things stopped developing from China with the end of the Tang dynasty. So all done by 900AD.
