How Could India’s IITs Do so Badly in a Global Ranking of Engineering Schools?

how does those quiz will help anyway? In India no one gives a damn about participating in such useless quizzes but rather are concentrated in getting best job possible...Indians and IITians in particular are getting top positions all across the globe

@Mr.Nair kindly post more pics of these campuses, the architecture is amazing. Can you open a separate thread for dedicated to Indian IT campuses?

I already said if getting a job is all your best talents care about, then Indian has long long way to go before you can see some world class innovative companies coming out of India. Anyway, best wish for your...job.

Google offers Rs. 1.7 crore salary package to IIT- Indore student - The Hindu

A 21-year-old B-Tech student of IIT Indore has bagged a job with Google at an annual salary package of Rs. 1.7 crore, one of the highest packages offered by the US-based internet giant during campus placements at the premier institutes.

Gaurav Agarwal, a student of B-Tech final year in Computer Science and Engineering, has accepted the attractive offer made by Google, a spokesperson of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore told PTI on Monday.

The offer by Google to the young student is one of the highest salary packages offered during campus placements at IITs across the country, she said.

A delighted Agarwal, who hails from a middle-class family of Bhilai in Chhattisgarh, said his academic session with IIT-I will end in May 2015 and thereafter, he will join Google’s office at California.

He said he has not yet got a specific joining date.

Agarwal said he had taken an online test at IIT-I for getting employed with Google. After passing the test, he was called at the company’s office in Gurgaon for an interview which he also cleared.

IIT-Indore, which commenced its first academic session in 2009, is among the leading technological institutes in the country.

Can you believe Rs 20 million/annum for a 20 year old IIT girl !

That's the point dude. India has a major bias. Not in Top 10 list, no problem. But the day placements slip the parents will lynch the government.

do u know its ur south indians with the highest number of fake i.t. degrees in usa and those indeez kicked out of usa once the farce is exposed.
also just google fake indian degrees to see where u stand.

You don't want me to talk about the quality of your degrees.

Unfortunately have to agree with you , most people go to engineering colleges only to get a job later & not because they are fond of it.
But as long as parents & students think only about getting into a good college only to get a good job with good money after leaving, then this nation will not see any world-class innovative companies.

Also many elders discourage their children from starting new companies, my cousin's parents scolded him a lot when he & his friends decided to take their idea forward to make a startup, even today they harass him & are trying to force him to get a good job in a good company!!

The fact that he likes it doesn't matter, let me quote my aunt:- "Passion is shit. what matters in life & to everyone is money which you will get only after you work in a good company with a good salary" -_- :hitwall::hitwall:

But yes the scene across India is changing, more & more parents are becoming open to the idea of their children having their own startup :) Add to that we have a govt. that is truly pro-business & pro-entrepreneurship, so things are much better than it actually seems through my post. But there is a lot which still has to change,

Though getting job has been prime focus of Indian middle class but more and more people are now becoming entrepreneurs

Simple- Indian Institutions are considered training schools and not research bases. This is a very common aatitude in society from time of Independence. No rankings will matter to parents or students as long as they get high paying jobs (which they will continue to get).

Would you agree that this is common to most post colonial nations, Especially former British colonies who still seem to follow Victorian educational systems that the 19th century Raj established to churn out bureaucrats to run the Empire smoothly than actually free thinkers ala 21st century R&D, Analysts etc

Actually no. I think the IITs were essentially created outside of colonial influences because their origins were with collaboration with MIT and American Universities. I think the reason was that there was such a large shortage of Engineers during independence that the brief they got was 'churn out high quality engineers'. Plus research happens in other government labs so the idea was probably let IITs train and let labs research.

Yes but the societal mentalities also contribute to the factor.. As somebody mentioned large number of these graduates seem to be in sole aim of securing a stable job than actually going further in the careers.. Most by parental pressures as well.. That's is the sole reason that Public sector especially in South Asian countries are bloated beyond capacity, Job security and a stable income are priorities .. Even here in Australia Indian graduates are known to work for pittance in the IT sector compared to others with similar qualifications, Thats another reason they're valued in companies, Hard workers willing to work for lower salaries as long as they're employed.. This kind of thought process may dissipate in the future granted the authorities do away with these archaic systems

You need all kinds dude. I know that IIT grads are usually very ambitious and forward looking. There are other engineering colleges where the kids are not necessarily that pushy. But they flock a large number of Software Development jobs, earn very good money and contribute to the economy.

Because talented youths do their job first, instead of attending competitions..
you need talented youth to beginning with````so please tell me deluded Indian, why India is till technologically backward, and a primitive factor driven society, if what you bragged are true````your ludicrous IT 'superpower' delusion doesnt even come close to the reality that your joke country's e-commerce and internet retail is like 1/60th of USA's and 1/80th of China's?

why there is no famous or widely used software and hardware that are developed by Indian?

the fact is your country has nothing to do with modern technology, and especially IT sector, you are nobody but a cheap call center that earns less than Chinese builders``

They are going to proudly tell you that Indians are working for some big companies as CEOs, and that they consider as Indians' great achievement. Just like 38% NASA engineers are Indians.

Actually, 39% of NASA engineers are Indians, not 38%.

India has a surplus of talent due to the demographic dividend. Many people who cannot compete in India migrate to the United States.
