lol...its true, In India institutes are ranked based on campus placement...the better the campus is able to place students, higher is it ranked...good or bad, I don't know, but it works well for India and perhaps for the world as IITs have given some of the brightest minds to the mankind.

Ignoring the usual trolls, the reason is reasearch. IITs are good undergraduate engineering school, but when it comes to Post Graduate Research, they are just not good enough. Their best graduates move to engineering schools in the US or Europe to pursue their research, and the IITs are left with left over talent( there are exceptions). Now am not saying the "left over talent" is not good enough, we need to provide them with the best faculty, infrastructure and support if we want to compete with the best. And once we have good infrastructure and faculty in place, maybe the cream of IIT won't migrate to greener pastures in the first place.

Tl;dr invest in Research, publish, collaborate with foreign universities, if you want to see the rankings improve. The indicators for engineering, will tell you why exactly Indian IITs don't do as well as their Chinese or American counterparts when it comes to ranking.

The quality of students at the top IITs are as good as anywhere in the world. The standard of education is also good. However there are at least 150-200 universities in the US alone with better infrastructure than any of the IITs. That is where the IITs severely lag behind.

Nice joke, lion share of IT employees are coming from South.Just karnataka or tamil nadu have more engineering colleges than your whole pakistan.
