How a tiny city-state became a military powerhouse with the best air force and navy in Southeast Asi

I like SG, very nice country and people, but comparing military strength between VN and SG is like comparing between Russia and China. The latter has no chance in a theorical war despite having more money. VN military budget is lower but we have some nice home made warships such as this type: Molynia guided missile corvettes. The firepower of those ships combined easily surpass than the entire SG navy.

Money does matter in today's warfare, especially in the air and on the sea. In a conventional warfare, today's Russia really has no advantage if you look at their arsenal. Even in a nuclear war, China also has the capability to destroy the planet multiple times: https://defence.pk/pdf/threads/chinas-294-megatons-of-thermonuclear-deterrence.107079/
Russia is our partner, so enough for Russia vs China.

Now comes to SG vs VN, you showed you are able to build a tiny missile boat, it might has a descent anti-ship missile, but it totally lack air defense capability, which make it useless against any country with a descent air force, such as Singapore. And remember, Singapore are capable of building much larger and more advanced ships like this:

You are little kid in front of them if you talk about technology...

Singapore has acquire some capability to develop S400 (probably it is too brag) style anti missile/aircraft system. Generally Singapore requires Israel to transfer technology

https://www.haaretz.com/1.5053685

A Paris-based online magazine covering intelligence and security issues this week called Singapore one of the most important customers of Israel's defense industry, laying bare the active, though secret, relationship between Israel and Singapore that began more than 40 years ago - a statement that comes after years in which Israel censored all local articles on the subject.

Intelligence Online, which is published in English on a bimonthly basis, states that the Southeast Asian island state helped finance the Iron Dome system designed by Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems to intercept short-range missiles and rockets, in exchange for which it is supposed to receive several Iron Dome systems to deploy on its territory.

http://www.israeldefense.co.il/en/content/singapore-buys-iron-dome-radar

According to the Singapore Defense Ministry website, the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) has acquired the ELM-2084 Multi-Mission Radar (MMR) from ELTA Systems.

The ELM-2084 radar is the one used by the Iron Dome system. Singapore Defense Ministry's approval to acquire this radar raises once again the question of whether Singapore has purchased the Iron Dome system or financed its development. No official statement was made by any of the concerning parties that such a deal was made, so all the reports on the matter are, for now, only rumors.

I do not have any doubt on Singapore's capability to develop some advanced weapons, after all, the majority of Singaporean people (74%) are ethnic Chinese, they are smart, also they have money which is essential in developing new technology. Although Singapore and China might have some disagreement politically, but I really don't think we should have a Singapore vs China comparison here, since it is meaningless and boring. Now the comparison between SG vs VN, which is much much more interesting and appropriate.

. .
Singapore is not hostile to China per se, but having taken so many monies from USA, Singapore needs to do USA bidding.

Also China has expectation that Singapore is majority Chinese and should incline naturally to China. Singapore did but not up to China expectation. Japan and Korea are more hostile to China.

When China outbid USA, you find the most pro-China Singapore.

I want relations to improve.fighting each other is not a solution.china should also listen to Singapore rather than doing war drills near them.both needs to maintain good relations.

You should give Singapore dozens of destroyers, submarines and ICBM otherwise nobody in VN considers SG as military power. Man, when SG was a paradise for mosquitoes, we annihilated the navies of Imperial China, kingdom of Champa, the Siamese, the Mongolians. We fought against the navies of the French, the Americans. Has SG ever fought a single sea battle? You can’t buy military strength by accumulating military hardware. In real wars, expensive weapons used by incapable soldiers will quickly turn to trash.

SG military centers to counter Malaysia and Indonesia, countries with weak armies, not against traditional military power as Vietnam.

Having said that, VN sees SG as friend. The chance we go to war is below freezing point. Our enemies are found elsewhere.

Our submarines can disable all sea ports and airports by Kalibr land attack cruise missiles. Far from the targets up to 2,500 km. There is no defense.

The submarines can hide anywhere in the depth of the Sc sea and fire at a safe distance.

Singapore does not get threaten by China. Singapore has participated in exercise with China. Singapore does not have any territory dispute with China.

Recent years, Singapore heed China advise and downgrade military relationship with Taiwan.

http://www.straitstimes.com/singapo...-army-carry-out-bilateral-exercise-in-nanjing

SINGAPORE - The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and the People's Liberation Army (PLA) are taking part in their third bilateral training exercise, Cooperation 2014.

The exercises which begins on Sunday and is being held in Nanjing, China, will end on Nov 9.

Brigadier-General Siew Kum Wong, Assistant Chief of General Staff (Operations), and Major-General Wang Chunning, Commander of 12th Mixed Group Army, Nanjing Military Region co-officiated at the opening ceremony on Sunday morning, the Ministry of Defence said in a press statement.

Exercise Starlight, Singapore’s military programme with Taiwan, is ending soon, claims China’s Global Times
http://theindependent.sg/exercise-s...an-is-ending-soon-claims-chinas-global-times/

“Exercise Starlight” is coming to en end, according to the Global Times. Citing unnamed Hongkong media, it speculated that the 42-year-old tradition of Singapore soldiers training its soldiers in Taiwan would soon cease, following Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s visit to Beijing.

It said: “Though there hasn’t been any official announcement, such military exchanges should have been stopped long ago…

“The ‘Starlight programme’ is an unsolved problem between China and Singapore. In 1975, then Taiwan leader Chiang Ching-kuo and then Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew signed the programme. Since then, Singapore has been sending troops almost every year to Taiwan for training, more than 10,000 soldiers in peak years.”

Global Times said the Chinese mainland has tolerated the “Starlight programme” for a long time due to historical reasons. The “illegitimate” nature of this programme means it will be increasingly difficult to carry on.

Modern warfare has nothing to do with anything you mentioned about the wars in the past. Technology and money is the most important thing now. And about submarines, even nuclear powered submarines are not that powerful, let alone a few diesel-electric ones. Without air superiority, they can be easily destroyed by some anti-submarine helicopters and patrol aircraft. And sorry forget about "2500 km" range missile, your club-s missile only has a 200~300 km range...

Pufft, whatever. Bla bla. Country without industry and proper economy is insignificant

Vietnam will never survive in Vietnam War without Chinese and Soviet assistant, LoL. Look at their rusty and dusty tanks fleets at their garage, their Submarines mostly spend their time in ports without proper operational funds. And what is military industry they have? And yet some clone calling themselves as traditional military power? Is laughable jokes.

Vietnam have garbage tiered army. Antiquated military hardwares, antiquated military structures, combined with inadequate training & operational hours makes the VPA even less compared to even Saddam's republican army.

They can't even beat thailand let alone singapore.

Gurkas (Nepalese mercenary) Unit of Singapore

With a stroke of genius, Lee Kuan Yew retain Gurkas unit in Singapore -- one reason is they can be put into use in case of racial conflict. Then minorities will never be able to accuse Chinese majority army of suppressing them.

The Gurkas are under police command, but they are trained to the level of special forces. They can function to the level of special forces in conventional warfare.

The Gurkas are Sino-Tibetan, who are unfortunate to be ruled under the caste-intoxicated Aryan Hindu Nepalese, and they are deem low caste people in their motherland.

The almighty US airforce couldn’t penetrate Vietnam air defense but Singapore can? SG airforce is stronger? Well, if you think so, good luck. VN has an excellent relationship to Russia, the limitation in missile range is coded in software and could be opened to a full range of 2,500km.
