HMS Dragon joins Royal Navy fleet

23 April 2012

HMS Dragon, the fourth of the Royal Navy's Type 45 air defence destroyers, has been formally commissioned into the fleet in a ceremony at Portsmouth Naval Base.

Dragon's Commanding Officer, Commander Darren Houston, said that the event, on 20 April, marked the ship's transition to frontline service and the end of sea trials.

"Thereafter the emphasis will be on combat readiness in preparation for our first deployment next year," he said.

The destroyer follows sister ships HMS Daring, HMS Dauntless and HMS Diamond in joining the fleet and leaves just Defender and Duncan to follow, with both expected to have been commissioned by 2014.

Sister ship HMS Dauntless is currently in the South Atlantic, while first-in-class HMS Daring has been deployed to the Persian Gulf.
