Hindus upset with Jim Carrey & NBC

proove it hinduism is the oldest religion in the world, you cant but you can only argue,

Hinduism is the recent word created in 1830, Hinduism is a british construct, when brits arrived they grouped together thousands of differents cults together and those which were separate from abrahmic faiths(islam, christians) and non vedic religions(buddhism, jainism) and called it hinduism, hiduism is a new religion

Hinduism is the oldest religion.
Ever heard of Veds and Upanishads?
They are the oldest books found dating way way back. Also i remember when i was in School and learning General Knowledge,a topic included dates of origin of various religion, every religion had a date but there was a blank on Hinduism and the date was written as unknown.

Change the channel if u dont like it.
I understand that people have right to protest in peaceful manner, whatever they dont like.

I protest against the protest, because it shows the people of my religion in poor light. It means we cant take humor(good or bad) the way it should be, and make unnecessary fuss over it.
Just because we are minority in US, does not mean we should play victim.

hey.. let's send mamta banerjee... she is good in protesting!!:D

Hindus upset with Jim Carrey & NBC
ANI, Jan 17, 2011, 11.30am IST

Hindus are disturbed over the portrayal of Lord Ganesh as a sex act on NBC's Saturday Night Live (SNL) and want apologies from all those responsible for it, including actor Jim Carrey and NBC.

Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that Lord Ganesh was highly revered in Hinduism and was meant to worshipped in temples or home shrines and not to be thrown around loosely in reimagined versions for dramatic effects in TV series for mercantile greed. Such absurd depiction of Lord Ganesh with no scriptural backing was hurtful to the devotees.

In a skit on NBC's SNL (January eight) titled "The Wrath of Ganesh", Jim Carrey (as erotic shaman Lee Licious) and Kenan Thomson (as Grady Wilson) demonstrate a sexual technique, mocking elephant-headed Lord Ganesh and his trunk in the process. Grady has traveled the world to find new sexual techniques to spice up the bedroom, the tagline of the episode (1587) "Grady Wilson''s Tantric N''Tasty" says.

Such trivialization of Lord Ganesh was disturbing and offensive to the one billion Hindus world over, Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, said and requested NBC to immediately remove it from all its websites and other links.

Rajan Zed also asked Golden Globe winner actor-comedian Jim Carrey (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) , actor-comedian Kenan Thomson, NBC Universal President and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Zucker, and SNL Executive Producer Lorne Michaels to tender a public apology for it and urged them not to inappropriately drag Hindu deities to advance the commercial or other agenda in the future.

Hindus welcomed Hollywood and other entertainment industries to immerse in Hinduism but taking it seriously and respectfully and not just for indecorous showing of Hindu symbols and concepts to advance their selfish agenda. Casual flirting sometimes resulted in pillaging serious spiritual doctrines and revered symbols and hurting the devotees, Zed pointed out.

Rajan Zed argued that Hinduism was the oldest and third largest religion of the world with about one billion adherents and a rich philosophical thought and it should not be taken lightly. No faith, larger or smaller, should be ridiculed at; Zed said and added if Hollywood or other entertainment executives needed any assistance about Hinduism, he or other Hindu scholars would be glad to help.

Meanwhile, Forum for Hindu Awakening has called it a "grave denigration" and "vulgar mockery of Sri Ganesh", appealing devout Hindus worldwide to protest against it.

Emmy winning late-night comedy show SNL, which entertains millions each week, entered 36th season on September 25. Headquartered in New York (USA), founded in 1926, and available in about 112 million households; NBC Universal claims to be one of the world''s leading media and entertainment companies in the development, production, and marketing of entertainment, news, and information to a global audience.

Lord Ganesh, however, is favorite of many Hollywood celebrities. According to reports, actress-director Goldie Hawn reveres Lord Ganesh, actress Olivia Hussey possesses an extensive collection of his statues, actress Kelli Williams considers him as her favorite, while writer-director Tracey Jackson wears Lord Ganesh necklace. In Bollywood, Mumbai-based Indian film industry considered largest in the world, most of the productions start with invoking Lord Ganesh.

In Hinduism, Lord Ganesh is worshipped as god of wisdom and remover of obstacles and is invoked before the beginning of any major undertaking.

Lady Jena you must note and appreciate that neither Jim Carey nor anybody else from NBC has had 27 Bullets pumped into him-them on the charge of having committed Blasphemy

There are hundreds of objects which they can use for mocking/joking why liberal extremists should always pick a god or religious figure for such acts??

Isnt it intentionally provoking people of certain faith?

This is simply a liberal extremism and any form of extremism be it conservative or liberal just create imbalance in a society which is harmful in the long run.

people make fun of things because they can. some things beg to be made fun of. wouldnt you make fun of a fat guy with an elephant head? in this case it just turns out that the guy with an elephant head is revered as a god by some. now its their wish to risk annoying the believers or not.

this isnt intentional provocation towards a religious group. this is humor. its not supposed to be taken seriously(unless you dont have a sense of humor, in which case u dont have a choice and i pity you).

there have always existed jokes about jews and rednecks and pathans and sikhs and other groups. this is better than those. those jokes stereotype people. this one just makes fun.

On a bad day, bad time and infront of bad person this is quite possible. "mahatma Ghandi"(Check the meaning of mahatma) was shot by a Hindu, as many similar cases still abound around the world.

Please answer a question:

CAN GOD BE INSULTED?

No GOD CANN"T BE INSULTED.

Does that mean we should stand and listen some falsely remark about our religion, name calling and attempt to belittle our god instead of asking him peacefully to refrain from such gross behavior ??

Tell me why come up with arguments in defense of things u feel strongly about at this forum itself when u feel something is wrongly suggested against be its our army, our democracy just about anything regarding our country ?

Now can our country be insulted??

i dont know what you are trying to convey but "parmatma" is used in context of God. we ascribe the adjective "mahatma" to gandhiji.

parmatma = param + atma = ultimate soul = God

mahatma = maha + atma = great soul

I don't think any sensible person would choose to do that when he knows that revered as god by nearly one billion human.

Are u talking about same movies celebrities here who themselves wouldn't hesitate to abuse if they were photographed without consent and might even break the camera??

Now we getting at some point.

Jim Carrey isn't some nobody jackass with zero importance . unforgettably Jim Carrey is movie star ,a big one at that.

If he says something against Christianity, it'll make to the headline in t that days evening news. I'm sure Jim Carrey knows that.

But since its a hindu God and Hindus have history of high tolerance for such BS gestures against our deities in the past thats why they don't have second thoughts airing such rude depiction of hindu gods.

and we know what happened to that Australian preacher/missionary & members of his family on 'that fateful day' in 1999

intolerance exists everywhere, it isn't just limited to portions of Pakistani society --regardless of what the indians want to keep telling themselves

Why anyone make fun of any religion? There are lot of comedy can be done away from religion topic. wether its Islam, Hindu, ...etc. People don't learn that this is sensitive topic and its better not to make fun of it...
