DHAKA: A Hindu has been jailed for seven years in Muslim-majority Bangladesh for insulting the Prophet Mohammed on Facebook, a prosecutor said Thursday.

Although Bangladesh is officially secular, criticism of Islam is taboo in the conservative nation of 168 million people and violent protests have previously erupted over social media posts deemed blasphemous.

Jibon Krishna Roy, a security guard, was found guilty late Wednesday of posting "obscene, derogatory and objectionable comments on Prophet Mohammed", prosecutor Nazrul Islam Shahim said.

The offence falls under the country's controversial internet laws.

"The judge of the cybercrime tribunal in Dhaka sentenced him to seven years in jail," Shamim told AFP.

Last year four people were killed and nearly 50 injured after police fired on thousands of Muslims protesting against a Facebook post by another Hindu man.

He was charged with inciting religious tension in a case still being heard in court.

In 2016, angry Muslims attacked Hindu temples over a Facebook post they said mocked one of Islam's holiest sites.

In 2012, meanwhile, Muslim mobs torched Buddhist monasteries, houses and shops in coastal Cox's Bazar district after a photo of the Koran that was considered defamatory was posted online by a young Buddhist.

But what did he actually say ?

If he said something silly then he could have been countered by dialogue and debate but if only the mullahs found anything objectionable then it is the mullahs who should be debated with. And this man released.

hindus shouldn't be encouraged with biases just because they're minority... the last thing we need is hindus trying to use their inferiority complex to try destabilize muslim community

Then you have no problem if majority Hindus in India do that to minority muslims. Good.

Keep your mullah hate away from this thread you disgrace

Every country has laws against hate-speech. Every country draws a line between freedom of speech and the interests of peaceful coexistence.

It is absolutely right to arrest someone if they purposefully inflame other groups in society. The rules apply to everyone, I would want the same punishment for a Muslim that insults Hindu gods too.

Areesh miyan, take a holiday in Muree or some other hill station. You need to put some days alone to realize that just a few decades ago so many Muslims were talking like me and those who weren't were being supported by Western governments. Hint for the latter category : The so-called Mujahideen in Afghanistan.

Cheerio.

Well, we need to look at such cases on case-by-case basis. That is why I wanted to know what he actually said.

Nang e Deen, Nang e Millat, Nang e Watan

Adopted secularism by rejecting Islam and sided with Hindus against Muslims. Truly a disgrace. His brothers are also roaming around in Pakistan, yearning to join their secularist Hindu brothers.

Did Faiz Ahmed Faiz reject Islam when he and his comrades tried to bring themselves into governance in 1951 ?

You should read this thread of mine from 2016 about socialist activism among Muslims right from early 1900s onward. The article is by Nadeem Paracha. You have Iqbal in your profile-pic. Read the below extract from that article that talks about him :
Building upon the initial thoughts of Sindhi and Sihwarwl were perhaps South Asia’s two most ardent and articulate supporters and theoreticians of Islamic Socilaism: Ghulam Ahmed Parvez and Dr. Khalifa Abdul Hakim.

Parvez was a prominent ‘Quranist’, or an Islamic scholar who insisted that for the Muslims to make progress in the modern world, Islamic thought and laws should be entirely based on the modern interpretations of the Qu’ran and on the complete rejection of the hadith (sayings of the Prophet and his companions based on hearsay and compiled over a 100 years after the Prophet’s demise).

After studying traditional Muslim texts, as well as Sufism, Parvez claimed that almost all hadiths were fabrications by those who wanted Islam to seem like an intolerant faith and by ancient Muslim kings who used these hadiths to give divine legitimacy to their tyrannical rules.

Parvez also insisted that Muslims should spend more time studying the modern sciences instead of wasting their energies on fighting out ancient sectarian conflicts or ignoring the true egalitarian and enlightening spirit of the Qu’ran by indulging in multiple rituals handed down to them by ancient ulema, clerics and compilers of the hadith.

Understandably, Parvez was right away attacked by conservative Islamic scholars and political outfits.

But this didn’t stop famous Muslim philosopher and poet, Muhammad Iqbal, to befriend the young scholar and then introduce him to the future founder of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

Yes. I believe that people's religious matters should be personal and not influencing the political system. Additionally since I want a communist world what I said earlier I desire to be applied to all of humanity. Now Islam being an older socialist movement modern Muslims should be striving to build a socialist welfare state in their countries, and such was the case some decades ago. Hence progressive countries like Egypt, Libya, Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria etc. That is the first stage before the second which is communism within a country. Of course, communism can be adopted immediately.

Secondly, I edited-in some text in my previous post and saved it after you replied, so I will repost it below :

In a series of essays for the magazine he used verses from the Qu’ran, incidents from the faith’s history and insights from the writings of Muhammad Iqbal to claim:

The clergy and conservative ulema have hijacked Islam.

They are agents of the rich people and promoters of uncontrolled Capitalism.

Socialism best enforces Qur’anic dictums on property, justice and distribution of wealth.

Islam’s main mission was the eradication of all injustices and cruelties from society. It was a socio-economic movement, and the Prophet was a leader seeking to put an end to the capitalist exploitation of the Quraysh merchants and the corrupt bureaucracy of Byzantium and Persia.

According to the Qur’an, Muslims have three main responsibilities: seeing, hearing and sensing through the agency of the mind. Consequently, real knowledge is based on empirically verifiable observation, or through the role of science.

Poverty is the punishment of God and deserved by those who ignore science.

In Muslim/Islamic societies, science, as well as agrarian reform should play leading roles in developing an industrialised economy.

A socialist path is a correction of the medieval distortion of Islam through Shari’a.

Then, please prove your secularism from Quran and Sunnah. As these are the two highest authorities for Muslims. Iqbal and Ghulam Ahmad Pervaiz are just humans like us, their statements can be interpreted, rejected and even thrown into dustbin if they contradict Quran and Sunnah.

We can discuss Iqbal and Ghulam Ahmad Pervaiz after discussing the highest authorities. You can create another thread for this discussion. I would love to hear your arguments on secularism, based on Quran and Sunnah.

Firstly, discussions built around religious matters are a banned topic on the forum.

Secondly, it would be futile because when Islam came about it cleaned up some things and modern Muslim socialism added to it. And there are some more things to be adopted. For example land to be a societally-owned resource instead of private ownership. Many of India's 30 million pending court cases are about land. This issue will be automatically solved through a communist socio-economic system where there is no private ownership of land. Further please read this new economic system that I have proposed.
