I think it just another aspect of our culture with the sea. We traded with the Romans (spices, pepper) Traded with the Arabs (start of Islamic empire) With the venetians, portugese, Dutch and became a vassal later to the British Empire.

Kerala had ancient ports dating back thousands of years. Only natural to assume fishing was another big aspect of this relationship with the sea.

I still keep thinking the phenomenon of Malabaris going to Middle East is the revival of 7th century trade. Sounds more aesome than "Communists destroyed our industry, so we have to go abroad to feed ourselves"

I remeber having a conversation with a Mallu girl. She was like a recent immigrant at the time. At one point, she said how she hated the Indians who thought they are being cool by picking on the FOB Indians.
