Australia has had it easy for 25 straight years due to Chinese mineral demand. Now they face very tough choices.

Australia needs structural reforms. It must become a republic with a Presidential system as the Parlimentry system isn't working for Australia. They also need structural reforms in economics and defense.

I doubt they will change their system. See, it is a very prosperous country with very few people and no border issues. One of the few countries who are virtually friends with almost all other countries on the planet, other than probably Singapore, Canada and Switzerland.

As for restructuring economy and reforms, they will still have strong demand in other emerging countries than China. As the manufacturing base shifts from China in the coming years (as Chinese manufacture and develop their own stuff), India, Vietnam, Korea and Next-11 countries will have high demand for Aussie resources.

As for defence, they need more defensive weapons like coastal SAM batteries, a more powerful Navy etc.

But not too heavy firepower because let's face it; no one will be invading them.

It is, it's how the system works. The people elect a government, if the government can't do their job, they elect someone else. Who is Prime Minister is irrelevant, it's not a U.S president style system. Government is a team.

It's natural in a Westminster system for the Prime Minister to change often.

I think he is referring to consistency of government policy. A lot of government policies take a long time to take effect. It is pretty common for long term policy to yield return a decade or decades after it is implemented. More importantly, it take times to implement them, especially in the early stage. Changing the leader (and his team) too often makes this kind of long term effort difficult.
