Given the serious national security threats posed by the Chinese tech company that developed the DeepSeek AI program, Australia has formally banned it from all government networks and devices. On February 4, 2025, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke declared the immediate ban after intelligence agencies determined that DeepSeek posed a "unacceptable risk" to Australian government technology.

Australia is now one of the first nations to firmly take action against DeepSeek, which has drawn notice for its cutting-edge AI skills. Concerns over possible data harvesting and its ramifications under Chinese legislation that can require businesses to provide the government with user information were sparked by the app's recent surge in popularity. Burke underlined that even if AI technology has potential, the government would not think twice about taking action when claiming that their strategy is "country-agnostic" and centered on safeguarding Australian assets, claiming that national security is at risk.

All Commonwealth entities that are not corporations are subject to the prohibition, which mandates that they eliminate any current DeepSeek product installations and stop any more from happening. This comes after the Chinese social networking app TikTok was banned on government devices last year for identical security reasons.

Burke asked everyone in Australia to be aware of how their data is used online and to carefully read privacy agreements in light of this move. The Australian government's position on foreign technology is also anticipated to come under examination as it negotiates the intricate terrain of international relations and national security.
