They actually do think ahead --- that's why while the keyboard warriors and the media goes hysterical about war (typically people who have very little real-world on-the-ground knowledge/intel of our defensive/retaliation capabilities), the people who actually make the decisions (Govt based on input from Generals) always choose not to attack.
