chief of naval staff Nirmal k.Verma gave awards and honours to Indian Navy heroes at Southern Naval Command in Kochi on Thursday.
Commander Naveen Thapa,a seaking pilot got his Nao sena
Medal for gallantry for flying an extremely hazardous mission in low visibility and
Stormy weather on august 30 last year to rescue 5 crew members of a submarine who were washed overboard
in rough sea.
Bijender,petty officer,air and aircrew diver,got medal for role in the same operation.
Commander Gangupomu Murali,in command of submarine INS Shankush,won
the medal for displaying tactical acumen and courage
to achieve covert operational
Objectives.
Lieutenant-commander Ajay Kanwar,an IL-38 pilot won medal for showing true mettle
When his aircraft suffered total power failure on 22-5-09
at an altitude of 2000 meter and 270 nautical mile from base. He was having just 13
hour of flying experience,but
still landed the aircraft which
had 8 crew member on board.
Rajan Singh, sea 1 clearence diver and marine commando
was awarded medal for salvaging IAF MI-17 heli that
crashed in Baglihar dam,in j&k.
Unit citations were presented to distroyer INS Ranjit,INS Matanga and MARCOS team of
INS Kalinga.
Uttam jeevan raksha padak was given to Surgeon commander G.K.Shreeram for
Performing a life saving surgery to remove a live grenade from body of police man injured in anti-naxal operations.
