interesting compare between HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) and Kenjutsu

or with other words, German longsword fencing vs Katana fencing...
Most people today belive european knights were unskilled brutal fighter only looking for the deadly blow without any skills in fencing...and that the japanese Samurai with their Katana fighting skills were far superior...
The true is in Europe they had better swords of higher quality almost 500years earlyer and the oldest still existing book about sword fight and instructions was writen in Germany and is today shown in the UK in a museum...
Here two guys present the style against each other... HEMA and Kenjutsu have more similaritys than differents... the little differents are mainly because of the slight differents of the swords...
It is amazing that today so much nonsens is spread around the world about knights and Samurai...
Enjoy

The people who say that samurai were better than knights are wrong. Sword fighting is an art and every style has its tricks it is just things change after Bruce Lee came to Hollywood.

At the end of the day there are many factors that determine who will win:-
1. Skill
2. Stamina
3. Will
4. State of mind
5. Your opposition

But the Shaolin monks are formidable adversaries too. Where the European swordsmen would have lost out would have been due to lack of hand to hand combat skills and the range of on body weaponry on the Samurais.

Europe have more iron so they can make more plate armor, fighting a knight using a mace is more effective by crushing thru armor, samurai armor is more spare metal sew here and their, so using a sword to cut in between. Its like a heavy tank vs a light tank

you cant crush throuh plate armor, high quality plate armor (face hardend) of the 15th century was.. extrem light (full plate armor suit was less than 25kg perfectly spread over the whole body) and it was impossible for human power to stab or hammer through 15th century european plate armor, you can knock out the guy if a mace hit the head hard... but it would not went through the helmet if it was quality.

hand to hand combat ... lol
ever heard of greeke wrestling? 1000years BC the most popular sport in greece the first no running Olympic disciplin added to the olympic games in 708 BC.... 1500 years BEFOR the Shaolin Temple was established..
Greek wrestling was adopted by the romans and spread over europe befor chrisit birth... still 500 years befor Shaolin Temple was established..
European HEMA specaily in full armor was a mix of weapon fight and hand to hand combat... you needed to be highly trained and skilled to even get a chance to unbalanece a enemy in full armor to get the chance to penetrate a gap in armor.

Sword fight without armor...

europeans much larger..(average european male of early middle age were 173cm... 2cm larger than average japanese male of TODAY)
european swords much longer (at same weight), better balanced, larger hand gard... but need more skill to use

for a sword fight without armor u need

-skill
-speed
-range

-stamina pointless, a swordfight to death without armor does not take long
-will pointless, if u lack speed range and skill
-weapon here european weapons completely outclass japanese in range and quality

1200AD > long sword
1.1-1.8kg blade 90-110cm (two hander)
in 14th century they started to become longer and more pointing as thrusting weapons (upcoming full plate armor)
1400AD > Katana
1.1-1.3kg blade 60-73cm (two hander)
1500AD > Rapier
1kg blade average 104cm (hand protection also cover the sword arm from the front) it is the only sword specialy developt for one to one sword duel without armor.. equaly skilled fighter Katana vs Rapier... 9 of 10 wins for the Rapier... far more range, quicker, more control, hand protection allows to stop enemy swings without fear of getting cuts in the sword hand, spring steel always get back into shape if bend in a duel (Japanese swords had a extrem hard cutting ege but a very soft back and stay bend if they were bend in combat)

This video is utterly nonsens...

first both use the same lenght of sticks... a longsword is 20-40cm longer than a Katana... the guy representing "longsword" has no idea what he does

Non sense or not, but these guys did it for their martial art training / sport, not just for show. Of course they are not the master of their art. But they did sparring, with body protection. And about the sword, they use standard kendo Shinnai and a wooden sword that look like a sword. At least, they know what they doing with their own martial art technique.

But if you insist :

Not all armor from Medieval Era Europe use iron. These guys use real medieval armor. You can see it here, Although the sword that they use are dull for the safety of two athletes. Like you see in here, the armor may intact, but the wearer suffer from suffocation; because the armor deny oxygen from outside of the helmet.
