Heavy gun-fire exchanged in Poonch sector

MENDHAR, Oct 11: Indian and Pakistani troops exchanged heavy firing at about half a dozen places in the forward areas close to the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district since last evening.

The official sources said that Pakistani troops violated ceasefire for the third time in less than 24 hours and pounded mortar shells and fired on forward areas along the LoC in Mendhar tehsil of Poonch district destroying a Mess of Army and killing two cattle.

Pakistani troops opened small arms firing and shelled 82 mm mortars in forward areas along LoC in Mendhar, Mankot and Bhimber Gali sub-sectors of Poonch district from 4.00 AM. Heavy exchange of fire and shelling continued till 1.00 PM, official reports said.

It was learnt that one of the mortar shells landed at ‘F’ Company Mess of 49 Rashtriya Rifles at Fateh Post in Upper Gholad area at 9 AM today. A portion of Army Mess was destroyed and huge fire broke out, said locals, adding that there were chances of injuries to some army jawans who were inside the Mess. These reports were not officially confirmed by the army.

Another shell landed near the house of Mohammad Majid Choudhary at Basooni village due to which the window panes and doors of houses were damaged.

In another incident, two buffaloes died after a mortar shell fired by Pakistani army exploded in forward Balakot, this morning.

Defence Spokesman, however, said Indian troops guarding the borderline with Pakistan took positions, and retaliated with equal caliber weapons, triggering heavy exchanges ant 0830 hours and it was still going on.

"There was no loss of life or injury to anyone in the firing and shelling by Pakistan along LoC on this side", the Spokesman said.

This is third ceasefire violation along the LoC in less than 24 hours.

On Thursday, Pakistan troops had violated the ceasefire and resorted to small arms and automatic weapon firing along LoC in Mendhar and Bhimbhergali-Balakote sub-sectors in Poonch.

Pakistan Army had again violated the ceasefire yesterday by unprovoked firing along LoC from 1845 hours to 1925 hours in Krishnagati sub-sector of Poonch district.

There have been 127 ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops along LoC in Jammu and Kashmir this year, which is highest in past eight years.

There have been over 130 violations of ceasefire in the Jammu region.

JAMMU: In yet another ceasefire violation, Pakistani troops targeted forward posts along LoC in Poonch district with mortar shelling and automatic weapons, prompting Indian troops to retaliate strongly.

Pakistani army troops resorted to firing of mortar shells, automatic and small arms firing in forward areas along LoC in Bharasingha and Mendhar battalion forward areas in Krishna Gati and Bhimber Gali sub-sector of Poonch from 6.30pm, defence spokesman said here.

Indian troops guarding the borderline with Pakistan took positions, and retaliated with equal calibre weapons, triggering heavy exchanges which are still going on, the spokesman said.

"There was no loss of life or injury to anyone in the firing and shelling by Pakistan along LoC on this side," the spokesman said.

2013 has witnessed several fold increase in the ceasefire violations as Pak troops violated border truce nearly 130 times along LoC in Jammu and Kashmir — highest in past 8 years.

India and Pakistan during NDA rule took a major confidence building measure by entering into border ceasefire along LoC in Jammu and Kashmir on November 26, 2003.
