A backward caste woman from Tamil Nadu is not what you think it is. Someone from a backward caste is actually the politically and economically most dominant person in this state. These are land-owning communities who oppressed the other communities (including the Brahmins in the past century) for a long time. You should have at least googled before spouting off your ignorance. The reason she converted is more likely because she got married to a Muslim. Nothing to do with oppression, cuz they are the ones who usually oppress.

These backward classes are the ones that have been screwing the low castes too. Know the difference between backward and low castes first. Even the guy you love to hate, Modi is a backward caste guy. And who else, Manu the man who wrote the infamous Manusmriti, if he lived today will be a OBC since he was a Kshatriya. Secondly the court took a stand to identify her as a backward caste. Not a low caste. That is legally correct.

Forgot to mention. She did not just convert to Islam. She converted to Islam Labbai. Now that is a merchant caste among Tamil Muslims. She converted to a Islamic caste (yep...there is a caste system among Muslims in TN). Most likely reason would be she married someone from Labbai community. Else there will be no specific reason to become a Labbai.

By birth, Ayesha was a Hindu, and she embraced Islam on November 28, 2005, and in August 2014 she obtained community certificate stating she belonged to Muslim Labbai community. As per a July 19, 1994 government order, Muslim Labbai is a recognised BC community.

She wrote examination for junior assistant/typist posts in December 2014. Though she was called for certificate verification, her application was rejected on the ground that she was not eligible for the post as she was not a Muslim by birth. She then moved the high court.

In its counter, TNPSC said Ayesha could have applied only under 'others' category where the upper age limit was 30 years. She was aged 32 years, and hence she was ineligible to apply for the post, it said. The woman's counsel, however, said the issue was covered by an order passed by Justice Hariparanthaman in an identical case, and added that the woman would be eligible if she is considered BC Muslim, and not under open category.

Acceding to the plea, Justice Hariparanthamanasked the TNPSC to treat Ayesha as a BC Muslim candidate and consider her for the post.

TNPSC, in its July 31, 2014 letter, called her for certificates’ verification on August 20. The official, who verified them, informed that she has applied under the BC Muslim category, but ineligible for the post as she was not a Muslim by birth. She then made a representation to TNP SC to consider her as a BC Muslim. Since no order was passed, she filed this petition. In its counter, TNPSC said as per government’s August 22, 2012 letter, converted Muslim has been classified under ‘others’ category.

If the petitioner came under ‘others’ category, she was over aged. She was 32 years while the age limit for ‘others’ was 30, TNPSC said.The judge said, “In M.U. Aariffaa’s case, after referring to various Apex court judgments, I have considered the issue in detail and held that a Hindu Nadar, who belongs to BC, on conversion to Islam as Labbai Muslim shall be considered as BC Muslim. “In the light of the judgment, a direction is issued to the TNPSC to treat the petitioner as backward community Muslim while considering her for the post of typist in Group IV services,” the order said.
