Because lower caste people will find it difficult to get job, if it is purely based on merit. Affirmative action does not mean govt promotes caste system, it is govt's way to rectify caste system. You will get stronger punishment if you abuse lower caste people, there are strong laws to protect them.
What is more important to you, equality or fairness.

Let me try to get this into your thick head for one final time. Affirmative Action is not bad. No one whines about positive discrimination. However, affirmative action has to be phased out slowly and also it should be accorded to the ones that are really deserving. The intention with which our founding fathers drafted the reservation system was right and it was valid for their own time. Those communities which have tasted the fruits of this system, even after many years, do not want to give up on this. They formed a strong vote-bank and no one had the political will to phase it out. See the example of Gurjars above. And, even Muslims are demanding quotas, just by virtue of being backward by their own making. The previous "secular" governments pandered to this undeserving community just because they were a votebank. Hence the objection from members here. That is a drawback of democracy, which of course, you will never know about since you live in a military oligarchy.

As shown above, more communities willfully want to have that backward class tag, which so offends you. It pays to be backward even if you are not one. That is the reason why they are not complaining to be called so. Now does that answer your question about the "backward class" tag?

The phasing out has now slowly began by the creation of "Creamy Layer" tag. By this, those belonging to the affluent class of the so-called backward community cannot avail the same benefits that the really underprivileged ones get. The only grouse being the "Creamy layer" should have even lesser quotas. Then again, that will happen in its own time. Not that you should have any concern given the situation your own pathetic backyard.

Yes and many are against it because it does not give equal opportunity but preference. The reservation and quotas must happen according to the situation and financial condition of family. Those who are with 97% get rejected in college and those with 60% are admitted on the basis of caste. This will only create difference and this is not the solution. Now Muslims were also lining up to get this free reservation. This is vote bank politics and no one will amend it in the constitution.

Merit wont work because recently a daily wager's sons cleared the IIT test at 167 and 410 positions, but were unable to secure admission due to lack of funds.

She converted to Islam only in 2005 so let us be fair here a human who had been under Hindu cast system since her generation , you just cant expect drastic change in few years in his or her behaviour.
